Facilities Maintenance Specialist & Advanced

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA), has openings for two Facilities Maintenance positions at the specialist and specialist advanced level respectively. These positions serve as part of the Facilities & Grounds Services team at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove (WVHUG).

The WVHUG campus is located off Highway 11 in-between Burlington and Racine and is a short drive from Milwaukee, Kenosha, and other key locations throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. The facility is surrounded by rolling hills and peaceful natural landscapes. The Veterans Home provides professional skilled nursing care including long-term care and protective memory care.

Position Summary

Facilities Maintenance Specialist

This position helps coordinate the preventative and routine maintenance and repair operations for WVHUG. The incumbent installs, maintains, diagnoses, repairs, and modifies electrical and mechanical heating systems, ventilating components, plumbing equipment, buildings, grounds, structures, and auxiliary systems for food service, laundry, custodial services, security, and medical care. In addition, the incumbent performs administrative tasks associated with maintenance activities.

Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Advanced

This position performs maintenance and repairs to building mechanical equipment including fire alarm systems; performs advanced-level electrical and plumbing maintenance and repairs; and performs maintenance and repair to heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) units, controls, steam lines, valves, and associated equipment. The incumbent independently troubleshoots, diagnoses, and determines alternatives for repair or solves the issue directly, and maintains, repairs, and completes minor remodeling projects to the building structural components, grounds, and paved areas.

Salary Information

The starting pay rate for Facilities Maintenance Specialist is $23.69. The specialist level classification is in pay schedule and range 03-12.

The starting pay rate for Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Advanced is $25.57. The specialist level classification is in pay schedule and range 03-13.

Compensation for current and eligible former State employees may vary and will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan

The Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Advanced position is eligible for a $3,000 sign-on bonus. This bonus applies to candidates with no prior state service in a permanent position in the last five years, and who remain in this position at WVHUG until completing probation (12 months).

Job Details

Due to the nature of the position, WDVA will conduct a background check prior to an offer of employment.

Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without WDVA sponsorship) at the time of application.

These are dayshift positions with typical hours between 7:00AM and 5:00PM. Evening and weekend hours, including overtime, may be required to meet the operational needs of WVHUG, often without advance notice.

The Facilities Maintenance Specialist position is a 1.0 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) position, typically working 40 hours a week. The Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Advanced position is a 0.8 FTE position, typically working 32 hours a week.

Qualifications

Performing general building maintenance and repairs (e.g., electrical or plumbing repair, HVAC system preventative maintenance, installing and modifying equipment, adjusting/calibrating systems, running diagnostics, etc.).

Well-qualified applicants will also provide details about their experience:

Performing maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems and components (e.g., Repair 240V circuits and motors, pump and compressor repair, steam valve replacement, etc.); or

  • Performing maintenance duties in a commercial or healthcare setting.
