Teaching Assistant Dean's Office Eng Science

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Teaching Assistant for SCIE 1050:
  • Pre-Health Planning and Prep and SCIE 2350:
  • Pre-Health Readiness, and as a peer pre-health mentor for students served by the Pre-Health Office.
  • The position will provide course and student support throughout the academic year.
  • Support instruction and activities in SCIE 1050 and SCIE 2350, respond to student questions, assist students individually and in small groups, and deliver guest lectures or presentations on selected pre-health topics. Assist with grading course assignments using established criteria and under the direction of the course instructor.
  • Specific course responsibilities will vary based on instructional and student needs.
  • Provide peer mentoring to the broader population of students served by the Pre-Health Office, including students who are not enrolled in either course.
  • Meet individually and in small groups with students to provide guidance and feedback on personal statements, secondary applications, interview preparation, effective use of Kaplan resources for health professions entrance exam preparation, and other aspects of navigating the pre-health pathway.
  • Assist with Pre-Health Office workshops, resources, and other student-facing programming.
  • Work collaboratively with the Pre-Health Advisor to support Pre-Health Office activities and student needs, exercising independent judgment within the scope of the peer mentor role and referring students to the Pre-Health Advisor when professional advising is needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current University of Detroit Mercy undergraduate student in good academic standing.
  • Junior or senior standing with significant coursework in the sciences and familiarity with the pre-health pathway.
  • Experience in a clinical setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students individually and in group settings.
  • Ability to provide constructive and supportive feedback to peers.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, maintain appropriate confidentiality, and interact professionally with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (if any):

  • Knowledge of pre-health pathways and health professions application processes.
  • Understanding of health professions entrance examinations and preparation resources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, mentoring, teaching, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback while preserving a student's individual voice.
  • Ability to explain information clearly and adapt guidance to students with different needs, career interests, and levels of experience.
  • Ability to facilitate individual meetings, small-group discussions, and classroom presentations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Ability to recognize when a student's needs or questions should be referred to the Pre-Health Advisor or other professional staff.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the Pre-Health Advisor.

Preferred Qualifications (if any):

  • Senior-level pre-health student who has completed or is well advanced in the medical, dental, optometry, or other health professions application process.
  • Experience preparing for and completing a health professions entrance examination such as the DAT, MCAT, or OAT.
  • Prior teaching assistant, tutoring, mentoring, peer advising, or student leadership experience.
  • Experience with undergraduate research.
  • Strong writing background and experience providing feedback on personal statements, application essays, or other written work.
  • Experience presenting information to groups or facilitating student discussions.
  • Familiarity with Kaplan test-preparation resources and other pre-health resources.

Physical Requirements (if any):

  • Ability to perform standard office and classroom duties, including computer use, prolonged sitting, and occasional movement between offices, classrooms, and other campus locations.

Licenses/Certifications (if any) 

  • None required.

Anticipated Schedule:

  • Approximately 10–12 hours per week, with scheduling based on courses
