Certified Personal Trainer
Are you interested in working at Recreation and Wellness as a personal trainer? Already hold a certification as a personal trainer? You will get the chance to work one-on-one with different populations to create customized fitness plans according to their needs and goals. The trainer's availability determines the scheduling of all sessions and clients. While not necessary, prior training experience is recommended! If you do not have a certification, there are other pathways to become a Personal Trainer.
Position Overview
The Department of Recreation and Wellness is a broad program located in the Division of Student Affairs, which includes organized and informal sports, fitness, outdoor adventure and experiential education programming. The Mission of the Department of Recreation and Wellness is to provide intentional experiential opportunities for students and the UNC-Greensboro community that provide healthy behaviors and foster student development.
The Group Exercise Instructors at the University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Department of Recreation and Wellness provide instructional fitness classes to the wider UNCG population.

Position Description
The Certified Personal Trainer develops and executes customized health and fitness programming for students and the wider university community. They will work with a diverse clientele to reach their goals in weight loss, muscle building and increasing their fitness levels through appropriate program development.
Task & Supervision
Certified Personal Trainers receive direct supervision from the Fitness Leadership Team Trainers work independently, based on the needs of their assigned and acquired clients.
Trainers are responsible for all aspects of the personal training process including client acquisition, client assessment and risk stratification, health/fitness program development and client retention efforts. Trainers work with diverse populations to effectively identify areas of habitual and behavior changes, while creatively communicating results-orientated programming.
In addition to working with personal training clients, Trainers are expected to provide meaningful contributions to the Personal Training staff and wider university community through educational events and marketing efforts.
A Certified Personal Trainer’s daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Health/Fitness Program Execution (85%)
- Plan and execute personal training sessions based on guidelines set forth by personal trainer certifying agency and the department.
- Provide impeccable customer service with all participants.
- Maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment for participants.
- Agree to honor the confidentiality of client’s records.
- Abide and enforce all department policy and procedures.
- Execute the department Emergency Action Plan (EAP), where and when required.
- Maintain all certifications required to continue personal training.
Client Acquisition and Retention (10%)
- Participate in client acquisition efforts including meet and greets with members, recruitment events and member outreach.
- Follow-up with previous department clients and conduct reassessment evaluations.
University Community Activity Facilitation (5%)
- Assist and plan fitness events for the Department of Recreation and Wellness.
Required Skills, Experience, and Certifications
- One or more, nationally recognized personal training certification (ACE, NSCA, NASM, etc.)
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification or ability to attain certification by employment start date.
- Proficient in design, development and execution of health/fitness programming.
- A customer-service centric communication style with the ability to foster a confidential client/trainer relationship.
- Ability to independently manage work and client schedules with minimal oversight.
- Attention to detail when managing client records and programming.
- Able to work in a feedback-driven team environment.
