Position Summary

The Ella Cline Shear School of Education at SUNY Geneseo seeks applicants for a Lecturer in Reading and Literacy . The School of Education has a long and rich history of preparing teachers who are knowledgeable, skilled in their instructional practices, passionate about their work, and motivated to provide leadership within their profession. Preservice teachers are placed in diverse field experiences throughout the region beginning in the second semester of their teacher education programs. Our candidates’ successes are evidenced by an overall 98% pass rate on the New York State Teacher Certification examinations for the past three years. All teacher certification programs of the School of Education are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). The School of Education offers undergraduate programs leading to initial teacher certification in Early Childhood and Childhood Education (Birth-6), Teaching Students with Disabilities (all grades, PreK-12) and Childhood Education (grades 1-6), and Adolescence Education (grades 7-12). Additionally, graduate students can work toward professional certification through our graduate program in Reading and Literacy (Birth-12) program.

The priority for our growing programs is teaching excellence: We seek someone with a strong commitment to teaching in a liberal arts setting who is prepared to teach both introductory courses and advanced courses in their area/s of expertise. A commitment to, and experience in, working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds is essential. Primary responsibilities for this position include:



 

  • Teaching undergraduate coursework (12 credits/semester – 4-4 load)
  • Teaching elementary reading and literacy methods for our undergraduate dual certification programs (Early Childhood/Childhood and Childhood with Special Education), content area literacy methods for our undergraduate Adolescence Education program, and courses for our graduate Reading and Literacy B-12 program
  • Coordinating the embedded field experience in literacy undergraduate and graduate courses with partner school district(s)
  • Building and cultivating mutually beneficial partnerships with our field experience and student teaching partner schools/districts and supervising teacher education candidates in the field
  • Providing academic advisement to undergraduate Early Childhood/Childhood and Childhood with Special Education and graduate Reading and Literacy B-12 students
  • Participating in assessment and accreditation activities and other department service
  • Contributing to the college and community, and/or provide professional service
  • Conducting research and other scholarly work in area(s) of expertise

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Master’s degree  in Reading and Literacy, Curriculum & Instruction, Teaching & Learning, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working/teaching environment.
  • A minimum of two years of experience providing literacy instruction (K-12).
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment as demonstrated in teaching practices, research, and service.
  • Teacher certification in reading and literacy (NYS preferred)
  • Candidates for this position must be eligible to work in the United States. VISA sponsorship is not available.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned Advanced degree (Doctorate or CAS) in Reading and Literacy, Curriculum & Instruction, Teaching & Learning, or closely related field. ABD considered.
  • Knowledge of New York State reading and literacy curricula and standards
  • Five or more years of successful K-12 teaching experience, including as a Reading and Literacy specialist
  • Experience teaching in or working with schools with culturally diverse populations, including English/Multilingual Language Learners.
  • Evidence of college teaching and advisement experience.
  • Evidence of supporting teacher candidates in field placements, and/or building and cultivating mutually beneficial partnerships with school districts or community organizations
  • Experience with curriculum design, assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in-person, remote, and online courses in the discipline and proficiency using state-of-the-art technologies for the classroom.
