IAS Gallery Attendant
The Institute of the Arts and Sciences (IAS) is hiring energetic and motivated student employees interested in working at the intersections of art and social justice.
Located off campus in the west side of Santa Cruz (100 Panetta Ave), the IAS is the premier art center of UC Santa Cruz and home of the multi-year initiative Visualizing Abolition. Originating nationally significant art exhibitions, events, and other programs, the IAS creatively educates students and the public about critical issues around art, visual culture, and the movement for prison abolition, as well as climate change, borders, and more.
Student employees at the IAS act as gallery attendants and help educate the UCSC campus community and the public about our exhibitions and programming. Attendants learn and assist with important tasks in gallery operations including but not limited to art education, art handling, communications, administration, and installation/striking of exhibitions.
Students employed at the IAS must be available to work intermittent Fridays, and some evenings and weekends. They also must have strong communication skills, including written and verbal.
All student employees will receive substantive paid on-the-job training, including learning about prison abolition and the other initiatives of the IAS, as well as gallery protocols/ procedures, information on how to lead gallery tours, and instruction on ways to connect with visitors. Attendants will also have opportunities to interact with curators and artists to gain greater insight into exhibitions.

70% Gallery Docent/ Public Liaison
The gallery attendant acts as the first point of contact in the art galleries, greeting and providing information to visitors attending art exhibitions and special events. The gallery attendant will receive training to educate visitors about the artworks and programmatic themes. They will also communicate gallery policies.
30% Gallery Operations
The gallery attendant will assist in gallery operations including but not limited to facility maintenance, preparing or distributing publicity materials, communications, staffing events, collections care, and installation/striking of exhibitions.

As a condition of employment, the final candidate who accepts a conditional offer of employment will be required to disclose if they have been subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct; received notice of any allegations or are currently the subject of any administrative or disciplinary proceedings involving misconduct; have left a position after receiving notice of allegations or while under investigation in an administrative or disciplinary proceeding involving misconduct; or have filed an appeal of a finding of misconduct with a previous employer.
