Afterschool Counselor

Location: Brooklyn, NY (Bedstuy, Gowanus, Downtown Brooklyn)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 2:00 PM–6:00 PM (hours may vary slightly by site)

We are currently hiring for both Lead Counselor and Assistant Counselor positions. Placement will be based on your experience, qualifications, and demonstrated leadership abilities.

About World Explorers

World Explorers is a Brooklyn-based youth development organization serving students in Pre-K through 5th grade through high-quality afterschool, school break, and summer programs. Our mission is to provide safe, engaging, and enriching environments where children can learn, build confidence, develop friendships, and explore new interests outside the classroom.

We partner with public and charter schools throughout Brooklyn to create programs that families can trust and children look forward to attending each day.

What You'll Do

As an Afterschool Counselor, you'll play an important role in creating a safe, structured, and engaging environment where children can thrive.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise and actively engage groups of elementary-aged students throughout the program.
  • Lead and participate in games, arts and crafts, STEM activities, enrichment experiences, and outdoor recreation.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment where every child feels supported and respected.
  • Encourage positive behavior while helping students develop social and emotional skills.
  • Ensure children's safety during transitions, indoor and outdoor activities, snack, and dismissal.
  • Support homework time and academic enrichment when applicable.
  • Assist with attendance, classroom organization, daily setup, and cleanup.
  • Communicate professionally with Site Supervisors, coworkers, families, and school staff.
  • Follow all program policies, licensing requirements, and safety procedures.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, patience, teamwork, and enthusiasm every day.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Senior year of High School, High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working with children in schools, camps, childcare, recreation, or youth development programs preferred.
  • College coursework or a degree in Education, Child Development, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is a plus.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background checks and onboarding requirements.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is a plus but not required.

Schedule

  • Monday–Friday, approximately 2:00 PM–6:00 PM.
  • Programs follow the NYC DOE school calendar.
  • Opportunities for additional hours during School Break Camps and Summer Camp may be available.
  • Occasional staff meetings and professional development trainings are required.

This is an active, hands-on role. Counselors spend their afternoons interacting with children, leading activities, supervising transitions, supporting behavior, and ensuring every child has a safe and enjoyable experience. Teamwork, professionalism, and consistent attendance are essential, as our students rely on caring adults who show up ready to engage each day.
