About Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum

The Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum honors the life and legacy of a passionate and visionary artist. The museum opened in 2022, one year after Rita Deanin Abbey’s death, and presents a remarkable selection of artwork created throughout her career. 
The museum preserves, presents, and advances Rita Deanin Abbey’s artistic legacy through exhibitions, educational programs, and events. We strive to provide inspiring experiences for all visitors and create meaningful connections between audiences and Rita’s art, life, and enduring creative vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interns will hone public speaking and educating skills as a docent, providing educational tours of the space that range from 15 minutes to 2 hours. 
  • Interns will learn advanced word processor techniques to create procedure handbooks outlining museum operations, such as opening and closing procedures, scheduling and time tracking, and inventory.
  • Interns will be involved in archiving the historical artist’s correspondence, organizing, digitizing, and cataloging letters, photographs, and other materials.
    • Archival documents are uploaded to a public archive accessible to the public for educational and research purposes
  • Utilizing proper archival storage techniques to organize the collection of over 2,000 works of art. This includes:
    • Condition Reporting
    • Proper accession and de-accession procedures
    • Database maintenance
    • Environmental Monitoring
  • All procedures are based on the MET Art Handling and Storage Policies.

Teaching Objectives

  • Interns will learn about professional best practices, develop communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Interns will understand the importance of museums to the community and culture by participating in our project to present the art of a legend of the Las Vegas community.
  • The program aligns with the ELA curriculum, encouraging educational tours, interactive poetry and art, and discussions with cultural institutions. Managing the museum’s collections is sustainable, and there is a plan for continuity through the involvement of new interns each year until the project is completed. Additionally, the museum is committed to maintaining outreach to schools and teachers for future partnerships.
  • This internship provides a free-flow environment where honing your ability to be self-driven is key. 

Eligible for 3 Class Credits Through COLA 402 and College of Fine Arts Electives.

  • The Museum Intern position is an unpaid position unless applicant qualifies for the UNLV Regents Service program

Paid Applicant Requirements

The Paid Museum Intern Position is organized through the UNLV Regents Service Program. 

Eligible students may be undergraduate, graduate, law, or dental. Furthermore, they MUST meet the following
requirements:

  • Formally admitted and in a degree-seeking program
  • Enrolled in six (6) or more credits
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) EACH semester
    • Undergraduate- 2.0 Cumulative GPA
    •  Graduate/Law/Dental- 3.0 Cumulative GPA
  • Meet at least ONE of the following eligibility criteria for this program:
    • Head of Household; or
    • Single Parent; or
    • Age 22 or over AND never attended college prior; or 
    • Age 22 or over AND had a break of two (2) or more years; or
    • No support from parents or family; or
    • Unusual family or financial circumstances; or
    • First Generation college-bound.
