Social Media Intern

About DebateRoom

DebateRoom is an early-stage startup building a live 1-on-1 debate platform where people take opposing sides on real topics in real time, face to face. We pair users on a subject, put them in a timed video room, and let an audience watch and weigh in. We build the full stack — web app, iOS app, real-time video, and the topic engine behind the matchups.

The role

You'll work directly with the founder on growing our user base. This is a fully remote, hands-on role at a startup: you'll own real work, see your posts go live the same day, and have a direct line to whether what you made worked. Work from anywhere in the US — we care about output, not hours logged.

What you'll do

  • Create short-form video and graphics for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and X
  • Run our social accounts day to day — posting, replying, and building a following
  • Write hooks, captions, and ad copy, then test variations to see what performs
  • Pull clips and highlights from real debates on the platform and turn them into content
  • Track basic performance metrics and report what's working
  • Help with online community building and campus outreach at your school

What we're looking for

  • Current student or recent grad in marketing, communications, or a related field
  • You actually use TikTok, Instagram, and X, and understand what makes a post travel
  • Comfortable editing short-form video (CapCut, Premiere, or similar)
  • Strong writing — clear, quick, and with a point of view
  • Self-directed and reliable over async communication, since we won't be in a room together

Nice to have

  • Prior internship, freelance, or personal-account experience growing a social following
  • Experience running paid social (Meta Ads, TikTok Ads)
  • Interest in debate, politics, media, or creator culture

Where this can go

We're a startup, and we hire from the people who show up and do the work. Interns who perform well may be considered for a full-time role after the internship, including an equity component. If you want to be early at something and grow with it rather than fill a slot at a big company, that's the trade we're offering.

Details

  • Fully remote, open to students anywhere in the US
  • Part-time, roughly 10–15 hours per week, flexible around your class schedule
  • Weekly check-in call with the founder; everything else async
  • Paid

To apply

Send your resume plus links to anything you've made — social accounts you've run, videos you've edited, or copy you've written. Portfolio matters more than GPA here. Questions? Reach out to Nick at nick@debate-room.com.
