Materials Science/Organic Chemistry Intern
Materials Science Intern
Location: On-site, Lemont, IL
Role Summary
In collaboration with Argonne National Lab, C1 Bio is looking to onboard a Materials Science Intern to support organic synthesis and nanofabrication efforts. We are looking for someone who is interested in translating a demonstrated bioprocess into a real-world impact through rigorous design, characterization, and validation of novel materials. This role is ideal for advanced undergraduates interested in gaining experience in a fast-paced startup environment.
About Us
C1 Bio is building the world’s first platform for economically-viable bioproduction of semiconductor materials from renewable and domestic feedstocks. Our technology builds on advancements in genetic engineering, strain evolution, and downstream processing technology to solve critical supply chain and climate challenges for the advanced materials industry.
Responsibilities
- Scale-up preparation of novel biopolymers, with a focus on high-purity and material performance
- Conduct materials characterization assays (rheology, TGA, molecular weight distribution, polydispersity index, DSC, contact angle)
- Execute relevant benchmarking experiments for photolithographic materials; such as patterning fidelity and resolution, surface roughness, uniformity, and etch resistance
- Incorporate new functional groups into biomaterials to broaden addressable markets, such as high-performance membranes, adhesives, and coating
Qualifications
Required:
- Working towards a B.S. degree in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field; with expected graduate date of June 2028 or sooner
- Relevant research experience in polymer synthesis
- Familiarity with materials characterization assays (rheology, TGA, molecular weight distribution, polydispersity index, DSC, contact angle)
- Confidence working independently, reading primary literature and designing experiments
- Desire to learn new skills and grow scientifically and professionally
Preferred:
- Hands-on experience with photolithography and nanofabrication in clean-room setting
- Familiarity with analytical techniques (NMR, ICP, Karl-Fischer)
- Strong scientific communication skills
- Experience working across highly interdisciplinary teams
- Demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship
We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet all of the stated qualifications. We’re looking for a driven candidate who can learn and grow within the role.
