Sunday School Lead Teacher
Paid Position: Sunday School Lead Teacher (Part-Time, Seasonal)
Bishop Janes United Methodist Church | Basking Ridge, NJ
Start Date: Sunday, September 20, 2026
Every Sunday morning, a small group of children — kindergartners through fifth graders — gathers in our church with energy, curiosity, and questions that deserve real answers. We're looking for someone who loves kids, loves the Gospel, and knows how to bridge the two in ways that stick.
Bishop Janes United Methodist Church is seeking a paid Lead Sunday School Teacher for the 2026–2027 program year, running September through June. You'll guide our children's mixed-age class (grades K–5) each Sunday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, using our provided Cokesbury curriculum as your foundation and your creativity as the engine. This isn't a read-it-from-the-book role — it's an hour of bringing scripture to life through crafts, games, visual aids, storytelling, and whatever else helps a restless second grader and a thoughtful fifth grader both walk away having genuinely encountered something true and good.
Class size typically runs between three and eight children. A dedicated adult volunteer will be alongside you every Sunday to help manage activities, support individual students, and share in the joyful work. We take the safety of our children seriously: all teachers complete a background check and our online Safe Sanctuary training before leading their first class. Beyond that, your primary preparation commitment is approximately one hour during the week to review the lesson and plan your approach. When life happens and you need a Sunday off, we handle finding coverage — that's on us, not you.
This is a 1099 contract position compensating $50 per Sunday, paid monthly. The teacher reports to our Sunday School Director, who provides ongoing support and is your go-to for questions, resources, and curriculum guidance.
We're looking for someone who:
- Has a genuine faith and a willingness to teach within the Wesleyan tradition
- Brings energy, patience, and creativity to working with children across a wide age range
- Can commit to the full September–June program year with reliability
- Has experience in education, childcare, or children's ministry — or simply the gifts and instincts that make up for the absence of a formal credential
Bishop Janes UMC is a religious organization, and this position involves active faith formation with children. We are an open, inclusive congregation and welcome candidates from all backgrounds who share our commitment to grounded, joyful, accessible Christian teaching.
