Science Education Instructor

Science Eye, a science and environmental education consulting company located in Broward County but travels to Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, is looking for passionate, enthusiastic and dedicated part-time science education consultants/instructors/educators. Science Eye staff are honest, caring and have a contagious, positive energy who are willing to be dynamic presenters. 

 

These are part-time positions that implement school district science standards through hands-on, inquiry-based, experiential programs that enable students to explore the world around them, gain new insights and make them aware that science is an exciting part of everything they do. We work with public and private schools as well as homeschools, Scouts and other groups who want science education programs. 

 

Our goal is to have fun while instilling self-confidence, develop critical thinking skills and to create a positive relationship with the environment. We don’t just do S.T.E.M., Science Eye goes full S.T.E.E.M. ahead (Science technology Engineering Environment & Math)!

 

Job Summary:

Instructors teach about various science topics/concepts both in the classroom as well as in the field. In-School, hand-on science topics may include Earth (geology, paleontology, meteorology, space), physics & engineering, life (environmental, conservation, ecology, senses), and social (American Indian). The field programs are in the Everglades as a slogger (walking on dry land and in the water) and at the beach. Visit the website to see all the various programs and topics that we teach.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or working on a degree in a science, an environmental field or education and/or experience in teaching/informing the public about environmental topics
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to pass a fingerprint background check to work with children ages 3-18 (for the Everglades Experience program the majority are 4th-12th grade)
  • Competence in, or willingness to quickly learn science/environmental information 
  • Timely, responsible and dependable
  • U.S. citizenship or foreign citizen’s U.S. work permit appropriate for the work
  • Means to carry a few plastic bins/water coolers/equipment and travel in their personal vehicle throughout the three counties of Southeast Florida (~85% is in Broward County, ~8% is in Palm Beach, ~ 6% in Miami-Dade, ~ 1% come from elsewhere)

  • Ability to work with children who possess a diverse array of learning modalities; ability to change styles of teaching to fit the needs of the group or individual (or willingness to learn skills)
  • Ability to be authoritative in situations when it is needed
  • Allow “your inner child” out

 

Physical Requirements

Must be able to work in adverse physical and weather conditions found in Florida throughout the year. On field days, consistently exposed to outdoor biological and physical elements; possibly other field locations may be scheduled. There is some heavy work lifting bins and water coolers in and out of your vehicle and setting up equipment, on occasion up to 50 pounds, usually 40 pounds or less.
