What is Kanary?
Kanary is a digital privacy and security platform for individuals, nonprofits, and enterprises. We combine proprietary technology with a U.S.-based team of privacy experts to continuously identify where personal information is exposed online, remove it, and prevent future leaks. Kanary helps you prevent and respond to stalking, harassment, doxxing, and deepfakes.
Who is behind Kanary?
Kanary is a female founded and owned technology company, started by Rachel Vrabec. Our origins trace back to data science work supporting the 2016 US presidential campaigns. From there we were pulled into supporting candidate and staff safety. The security breaches and personal privacy violations of that time inspired the beginnings of the company. After receiving a grant from Y Combinator, we launched Kanary in 2020 and participated in Mozilla's accelerator. In 2022, we raised a seed investment and have been growing the company sustainably since. Our core team manages all aspects of the service, support, and technology and we collaborate directly with members on our Reddit, LinkedIn, Discord, and via email.
Your role:
Data analytics is critical to how Kanary supports thousands of members and millions of privacy requests every year. Our team is highly technical, and you will have a lot of support as you learn our systems and help improve them. Your day-to-day will include reviewing the data from our automated systems, figuring out why data is not being removed according to US Privacy law, and working with engineers to update our systems to make sure our customers are protected as quickly as possible.
You should be comfortable writing queries with SQL and running basic data analyses with Python to answer business-relevant questions. You must be able to work quickly in spreadsheets, administrative workflows, and task management systems. And you must be proficient in understanding and analyzing data trends to suggest how to better improve the overall outcomes of our ecosystem. Proficiency in statistics is preferred.
The Kanary team is tight knit and fast moving. Communication skills are critical as you work through your projects and share your learnings with the team. The role is fully remote, so you should feel comfortable tracking your own tasks in a system like Notion, using Slack to troubleshoot ambiguity or problem solve, and have a consistently stable internet connection for joining team meetings. Our team has an open culture with very little hierarchy, this means you have plenty of opportunities to share ideas, voice issues, and learn from startup and security veterans.
This role is an entry-level internship on our team projected to take place from late Sept/early Oct to Dec., with room to grow into full-time positions for the right person. Rising juniors/seniors as well as new grads out of school are encouraged to apply.
