Story Research Intern
Story, Research, and Social Media Intern
About the role
I'm an independent filmmaker who also manages two ongoing client accounts, covering video editing, graphic design, blog
writing, and social content. This internship is a chance to get hands-on experience across three areas that matter in film and
media careers: story research, social media strategy, and the day-to-day operations that keep a small production running. You'll work directly with me, see how projects actually get made, and build your portfolio with writing, design, and light social video editing work.
What you'll do:
Story & research
Research potential story leads, subjects, and topics for upcoming films, blog posts, and pitches.
Pull background info, sources, and interview prep for scripts and articles.
Track down contact info, permissions, and location details for shoots.
Social media
Help build and maintain the content calendar across platforms.
Schedule and publish posts, format captions/hashtags per platform.
Pull weekly engagement numbers into a simple summary and help spot what's working.
Design from templates and research social posts across clientelle with topics ranging from Food Sovereignty to Black Art and Media.
Admin & coordination
Draft and send scheduling emails to shoot participants, clients, and collaborators.
Keep a shared tracker of deadlines and outstanding tasks; flag anything at risk.
General inbox and calendar support as needed.
What you'll: get
Direct mentorship and regular feedback on your research, writing, and social media work.
Real portfolio pieces including published posts, research you can point to, a byline where possible.
Exposure to how an independent filmmaker runs a business with client work, production, and marketing all in one.
A flexible, remote schedule that works around a class schedule.
This is for you if:
Are a student or early-career person interested in film, journalism, documentary, or media production.
Are curious, thorough, and you enjoy digging into a topic and organizing what you find.
Have some familiarity with social platforms and are comfortable learning scheduling/editing tools.
Are organized and reliable with follow-through. This role is as much about consistency as creativity.
Communicate clearly and briefly.
Hours & compensation:
10–15 hours/week, flexible around school/other commitments.
Unpaid/School credit internship with the potential for hire at $15–18/hr.
