Nature of Work

The Student Research Assistant (RA) will work within the Division of Family Planning, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Division of Family Planning is nationally recognized as one of top family planning clinical research sites. We are a member of the NIH’s Contraceptive Clinical Trials Network and also work with multiple sponsor and investigator initiated studies. The role will be to help the division’s research coordinators conduct activities required for research protocols. Examples include schedule study participant visits, accurately record and enter data, respond to data queries from study sponsors, and support physician investigators. This position requires that you work with other research coordinators in the Division of Family Planning. This is a remote position. The RA will also help with a medical record review to assess long-term outcomes in contraceptive initiators. This will include reviewing medical charts, extracting data, and recording data in REDCap, Research Electronic Data Capture system. A solid fundamental knowledge of biological and medical sciences is necessary for this position.  Ability to work with a team and independently is essential for this position. Additionally, an appreciation of standard methods of clinical research is highly desirable. The RA in this position will not be called on to make independent medical decisions at any time.   This position offers opportunities for independent study credits, practicum and capstone or thesis work. 

Professional Field

We require good clinical practice in the performance of clinical research for this job.  Prior experience in research or the medical field is preferred, especially in Family Planning. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be very attentive to detail and be able to complete all required documentation (either manual or electronic) as required by the studies being performed.

Supervision Received

The RA will be supervised and will report to Eva Dindinger, Research Services Program Manager and Dr. Jeanelle Sheeder, Research Director for the Division of Family Planning.  There will be regular meetings of the RA with supervisors.  Formal discussions will be held every one to two weeks, though ad hoc discussions and supervision will be available virtually every day. The degree of active supervision will depend on the successful applicant’s background and experience in clinical research.

Examples of Work Performed

Recording of clinical information, data entry, data query resolution, basic analyses for grant submission, presentations, or publication, venipuncture, and medical record review for study purposes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Careful attention to detail, ability to work with a team and independently, and the ability to interact with both clinical research participants and other health professionals is critical to success in this position. Individuals should have good basic knowledge of reproductive health and medical records documentation and structure.  The individual must be able to utilize Windows-based computers for communication, data extraction, and completion of reporting forms as required.  Experience using Microsoft Office® , including Excel® , is essential. Proficiency with REDCap and Epic Electronic Medical Record System is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Certifications in CITI Good Clinic Practice for Healthcare Providers are required prior to or shortly after employment begins.

Minimum Requirements

This position requires a bachelor's degree in a science-related field, two years of relevant experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology research, and current enrollment in a graduate or post-bachelor's training program.

Alternatively, candidates who are currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program may be considered if they have demonstrated experience supporting clinical or research activities in an academic, healthcare, or research setting.

Individuals with strong experience working with adolescents and in Family Planning clinical care are preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology is required, and knowledge of gynecological terminology is strongly preferred.

Salary Range

Salary is between $17.05 to $25.99 per hour and is commensurate with skills and experience.
