AVID College Tutor

AVID College Tutor – Vista Magnet Middle School

Location: Vista Magnet Middle School, Vista, CA
Pay: $17.42 per hour
Schedule: Wednesdays & Fridays, 10:25 a.m.–1:25 p.m.
Position Type: Part-Time

Vista Magnet Middle School is seeking motivated, dependable college students to serve as AVID Tutors for our middle school AVID program. This is a great opportunity for college students who enjoy working with young people and want to gain hands-on experience in mentoring, education, leadership, communication, and youth development.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college and career readiness program that helps students develop the academic skills, confidence, and habits necessary for success in high school, college, and beyond.

Position Responsibilities

AVID Tutors work with small groups of students during structured AVID tutorial sessions. Rather than simply providing answers or traditional one-on-one tutoring, AVID Tutors help students become independent learners by guiding them through the problem-solving process.

Tutors will:

  • Facilitate small-group tutorial sessions with middle school students.
  • Use questioning and inquiry strategies to help students work through academic challenges and points of confusion.
  • Encourage students to explain their thinking, collaborate with peers, and develop solutions independently.
  • Support students in strengthening critical-thinking, problem-solving, communication, and study skills.
  • Create a positive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking academic risks.
  • Serve as a positive college role model and share appropriate experiences about college and educational pathways.
  • Participate in training to learn the AVID tutorial process and effective questioning strategies.

Qualifications

We are looking for college students who are:

  • Currently enrolled in college.
  • Dependable, responsible, patient, and professional.
  • Comfortable interacting with and encouraging middle school students.
  • Strong communicators who enjoy working collaboratively with others.
  • Willing to guide students through questions rather than simply providing answers.
  • Able to consistently work Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:25 a.m.–1:25 p.m.

Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. No previous tutoring or teaching experience is required. Training and support will be provided.

This position is especially well suited for students interested in education, psychology, counseling, social work, child and adolescent development, liberal studies, communication, STEM, or other careers involving leadership and working with young people.

Why Become an AVID Tutor?

AVID Tutors have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on middle school students while developing valuable professional skills. Tutors gain experience in mentoring, leadership, collaboration, communication, questioning, and group facilitation while helping students build confidence and see college as an achievable part of their future.

For college students considering careers in education or other youth-serving professions, the position also provides valuable firsthand experience working directly with students in a school setting.
