Braille Transcriber
SUMMARY
Under general supervision, assists teachers and students by transcribing educational materials to/from Braille, large print or tape recordings; prepares various instructional aids; orders and receivesBraille and other instructional materials for visually impaired students.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Transcribe a variety of instructional materialsinto an appropriate media such as Braille, large type or raised line drawings; determine appropriate format; proofread and verify accuracy of transcribed materials.
- Prepare copies of tests, study materials, textbooks, charts, worksheets and other materials for visually impaired students; type instructional materials, lessons and worksheets in large type for partially sighted students.
- Overwrite student-made Braille materialsto written form for teachers.
- Operate a varietyof office and Braille equipment including a copier,book binder, paper cutter, Braille embosser, computer and assigned software.
- Locate, order, and receive Brailleand other instructional materials for visually impaired students.
- Communicate with vendors,press representatives and others to arrange for purchase, delivery and loan of learning materials as assigned.
- Receive, process and distribute a variety of books and instructional materials used in the program for the visually impaired.
- Maintain appropriate inventoryof books, supplies, and materials applicable to the program.
- Catalog and maintain libraryof visually impairedand Braille transcriptions, books, and others.
- Check instructional materials in and out of the library as needed.
- Communicate with parents,teachers, staff, administrators and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
- Bind Braille and large print books; preparebooks and materials for shipment to various school sites and other various locations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of
- Instructional processes and procedures pertaining to a programfor the visually impaired.
- Proper operation and use of Braille and large print transcription equipmentand machines.
- Braille codes.
- Literary Braille and some exposure to the Nemeth Code of Braille mathematics.
- Basic record-keeping techniques.
- Inventory methods and practices.
- Operation of a computer terminal and specialized software.
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Both oral and written communication skills.
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to
- Perform a variety of Braille translation and transcription functions and activities.
- Perform routine clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel.
- Operate a Braillewriter, large print computer or other relatedoffice machinery and instruments with speed and accuracy.
- Locate, order, and receive Brailleand other instructional materials for visually impaired students.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Use proper English, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Maintain routine records and files.
- Operate a computer and assigned software.
- Establish and maintaincooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Experience
- No experience is required.
Licenses/Certificates
- Library of Congress Certificate in Literary Braille is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS WHICH MAY OCCUR
- Work inside protected from weather more than 7 hrs/day
- Work on surfaces that are flat and stable more than 7 hrs/day
- Typical office environment.
