Job Title: Undergraduate Research Assistant
We are seeking a diligent and self-motivated Undergraduate Research Assistant to join FICAM (Functional Intelligent Composites & Advanced Manufacturing) Lab in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) led by Prof. Dae Han Sung. The selected candidate will play a vital role in conducting single fiber pullout tests to characterize interfacial bonding properties of fiber-reinforced composites. The specific tasks in the project include to:
- Assist in the setup, calibration, and operation of single fiber pullout testing equipment.
- Prepare composite specimens and perform fiber pullout experiments under controlled conditions.
- Acquire load–displacement data and assist with data processing and analysis related to interfacial strength and failure mechanisms.
- Support microscopy-based characterization (e.g., optical or SEM image preparation) related to interfacial failure observations.
- Maintain accurate experimental records, data organization, and documentation.
- Prepare brief reports summarizing experimental procedures, results, and testing progress.
Qualifications:
- Strong academic record with an interest in materials science, mechanical engineering, or composite materials research.
- Familiarity with data analysis, plotting, and basic programming (e.g., Python or MATLAB) is preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in using standard software for data analysis and documentation.
- Prior laboratory-based research experience is preferred but not required.
Feel free to reach out to Dr. Dae Han Sung at daehan.sung@usu.edu if you have any questions.
FICAM Lab is an equal-opportunity employer, and we strongly encourage applications from students of diverse backgrounds.
