SUMMARY

The Corrections Deputy is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and orderly operation of a correctional facility. This role involves supervising inmates, conducting security checks, and responding to emergencies. The Corrections Deputy also assists with administrative tasks, inmate intake and release, and supports rehabilitation programs to aid inmate reintegration. The position requires strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with inmates, staff, and external agencies.

Corrections Deputies participates in the daily functions of the correctional facilities and supervises and maintains the safety and security and the proper care of incarcerated inmates.

Must meet minimum requirements under state law for certification to work in the jail, including but not limited to, the 92 -hour state certified Jail Standards POST Level III, and other mandated requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND SUTIES

Responsible for performing a variety of duties involved in the intake, processing, movement and release of prisoners within the Sheriff’s Office detention facility, monitors audio and visual surveillance equipment and movement of personnel throughout the facility.  The primary duties of the Corrections Deputy include maintaining the safety and security of the facility, inmates, public and court functions at all times. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Maintains custody, safety, and sanitation of prisoners confined in the correctional facility.
  • Maintains order, discipline, and security of the correctional facility.
  • Performs pat-down searches and unclothed searches as necessary.
  • Processes inmates admitted to and discharged for transfer from facilities including booking and release, fingerprinting, photographing, and issuing supplies and clothing to new inmates.
  • Provide direct and remote supervision of inmates within housing and other areas of a jail, courthouse complex, or secure perimeter as assigned to maintain a safe and secure environment.
  • Observe conduct and behavior of inmates, respond to and control emergency situations, and use appropriate levels of force to control combative, volatile, or hostile offenders.
  • Security Patrols: Conduct regular inspections and security checks of cells, common areas, and perimeter to prevent contraband, escapes, or other security breaches and reports any irregularities or potential security risks.
  • Use de-escalation techniques and physical force when necessary to manage volatile situations.
  • Supervise the dispensing of food in a timely fashion to inmates, ensuring compliance of all health and safety regulations.
  • Supervise inmates and trustee-inmates work crews.
  • Inmate Processing: Processes or assists with inmate intake and release procedures, including searching, fingerprinting, photographing, and maintaining accurate records of personal property
  • Maintain detailed reports on inmate behavior, incidents, and daily activities.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements, documenting any breaches of policy or incidents requiring intervention.
  • Conduct metal and x-ray detection of individuals and materials before entering facilities, perform necessary searches for weapons and contraband, and completes reports.
  • Inspect cells, housing areas, locks, windows, grills, doors, gates and perimeters of buildings and grounds for security purposes.
  • Transport inmates to other facilities as required.
  • Run daily reports as required.
  • Enter information into a database to capture daily activities.
  • Communicate with the public, respond to questions and assist as necessary.
  • Operate a master control center as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Prepares written documents pertaining to inmate activities, population counts, and other informational data.
  • Coordinates prisoner transports with patrol division when necessary.
  • Maintains and submits all appropriate records.

 

ROVER: The primary duties of the Floor Deputy include, but are not limited to the following:

  • First and foremost, make periodic visual contact with inmates located in housing areas and activity areas, by making roundsat frequent and irregular intervals.
  • Ensure inmatesfollow all rulesand regulations of the facility.
  • Assist with inmate movement(i.e., to the indoor/outdoor recreation areas, Medical, visitation, attorney rooms, video courtroom, programs room, law library, etc.).
  • Respond to the medical needs of inmates.
  • Supervise and/orassist with serving meals.
  • Exchange inmate’sclothing and beddingas required.
  • Distribute inmate supplies, kites, etc.
  • Conduct and supervise shaving procedures for inmates.
  • Distribute mail to inmates or collect inmates’ outgoing mail and correspondence.
  • Conduct cell searches.
  • Answer telephone calls as needed.
  • Communicate with inmates via the intercomor in person.
  • Pat down inmates as required.
  • Assist with other correction duties as required.

 

PROGRAM DEPUTY: 

  • Oversee the Inmate Worker Program.
  • Interview inmates to determine appropriate programs.
  • Assign and schedule inmates to various programs and maintain program schedules.
  • Supervise inmate workers on any special details or assignments.
  • Provide orientation and training to all inmate workers.
  • Review SB1145 inmates and note requests and staff recommendations for review for the Supervisory Authority Board meetings.
  • Review and update volunteer book(s) and applications.
  • Assist transport deputy as needed.
  • Assist with other correction duties as required.

 

TRANSPORT DEPUTY: The primary duties of the Transport Deputy include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform court escort duties.
  • Perform video arraignment duties.
  • Schedule and execute cooperative transports.
  • Schedule and execute inter-agency transports, both inside and outside the State of Oregon.
  • Execute medical transports at the direction of the medical staff.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of TPJ Transport vehicles to ensure vehicles are safe and fully functional.
  • Maintain all records associated with transport duties.
  • Assist with booking as needed.
  • Assist with other corrections duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid state driver’s license with satisfactory driving history 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience in corrections, including supervisory duties preferred.
  • POST Level III certification and current firearms qualification. 
  • Strong knowledge of jail operations, Louisiana regulations, and security protocols
  • Strong communication, multitasking, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in report writing and jail management systems
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as policy, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of visitors or employees of organization. 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 

 

COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficient computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine data base activity, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, etc. 

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations and manage multiple tasks at one time. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: Valid Louisiana Motor Vehicle Operator's License; proof of residency in Tangipahoa Parish (voter registration card); birth certificate (minimum age of 18 years); and Social Security Card. Louisiana P.O.S.T. Level 3 certification or out of state equivalent or the ability to obtain Louisiana P.O.S.T. level 1 certification within one (1) year of hire date as mandated by Louisiana P.O.S.T. guidelines. Maintain qualifications in accordance with Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office policy and Louisiana P.O.S.T. guidelines.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Deputy is required to wear a duty rig which weighs on average between 20-25 pounds and is preferred to wear a bullet proof vest weighing on average 5 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. HAZARDS: Variety of environments including noise, fumes, dust, traffic, etc.  Extensive motor vehicle operation.  Exposed to moving traffic enforcement/control situations.  Subject to assault, combative or resistive persons in arrest situations, disturbances or other emergency calls.  May have deadly/dangerous weapons used against deputy.  May be required to break up fights between two or more persons.  May respond to hazardous materials spill or drug lab environment.

 

SUBSTANCE ABUSE TESTING: Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment/pre-placement and random alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office General Orders.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Operates motor vehicle under regular and emergency conditions, including two-way radio.  Uses hand tools to effect custody of violators, including handgun, shotgun, handcuffs, baton, pepper spray, and flashlight.  Must be able to hold handgun and discharge accurately.

Office Duties:  Normal office tools/equipment (i.e. copier, fax machine, computer terminal, phone, and small desk tools).

 

PRODUCTS AND MATERIALS: Fingerprint dust, pepper spray, ammunition, highway flares, gasoline, oil, and any other material which might be found at an incident scene.

 

ADDITIONAL DEMANDS: Subject to varying levels of stress in accordance with type of assignment, dispatched calls, traffic violator contact, follow-up investigation, suspect interviewing and management, crime scene and evidence processing, etc.  Includes defensive posture, physical and mental state necessary to effect arrest, backup fellow deputy, react in a life-saving manner.
