Health Communications Intern
The National Center for Health Research (NCHR) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization in Washington, D.C. dedicated to improving the health and safety of adults and children. We are seeking 2 grad school level interns for the Fall semester, starting in August or September.
Our Health Communications Internships require a commitment of at least 20 hours/week for at least 12 weeks. This is a hands-on opportunity for current grad students or recent graduates in communications, journalism, or public health. Interns will work directly with NCHR staff on research, writing, and social media to support our mission of providing evidence-based information about medical and health topics that everyone can use. .
We are looking for interns who are intellectually curious, reliable, strong communicators, and excited to learn more about how a national nonprofit organization communicates health information to the public.
What You'll Do
Intern responsibilities may include:
- Researching current and emerging health topics
- Conducting literature searches and reviewing scientific and medical research
- Writing and assisting with articles, fact sheets, website content, and other health materials
- Translating complex health and research information into clear, engaging language for the general public
- Developing and posting content for NCHR's social media platforms
- Identifying timely and trending health topics for social media and other communications
- Fact-checking health information and claims using credible scientific and government sources
- Seeking research information with implications for improving the quality of medical treatments and prevention strategies on cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and many other health topics as well as environmental health topics.
- Participating in staff meetings and discussions about current public health topics
Applicants must have a relevant graduate degree or have completed at least 2 semesters of a graduate program.
Successful candidates will:
- Have strong research and writing skills
- Be able to explain complicated health information in clear, everyday language
- Have experience in social media and public health communications
- Have strong attention to detail
- Be organized, dependable, and able to meet deadlines
- Enjoy learning and contributing ideas
Where and When
This is a hybrid internship based in Washington, DC.
Interns and staff are required to work in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays from approximately 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Interns will also work remotely at least 6 additional hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays.
Stipend: $300-$500 per month
