Engineering Surveying Assistant
Responsibilities
- Assist the course instructor with field exercises, including setting up, operating, and managing surveying equipment.
- Provide guidance and support to students during laboratory sessions, helping them understand the practical application of surveying techniques.
- Expect to work at least two field labs each week, from 2:30–5:30 p.m.
Participate in weekly training sessions scheduled for Thursday afternoon or Friday morning (arranged with all Assistants after hire) and allow additional time as needed for lab preparation.
- Help ensure that field equipment is properly handled, organized, cared for during use, and maintained.
- Assist students with data collection, field procedures, calculations, and troubleshooting.
- Provide additional assistance to students outside scheduled laboratory periods as needed.
- Assist the course instructor with course-related tasks, including reviewing student work and providing feedback.
- Help students understand course expectations, assignments, and surveying concepts.
- Assist with other course-related responsibilities as needed.
Expectations
- Prioritize Surveying Assistant responsibilities and meet agreed-upon deadlines, including during periods when other courses, employment, or extracurricular commitments may compete for time.
- Communicate promptly with the course instructor regarding scheduling conflicts or circumstances that could affect assigned responsibilities.
- Be organized, punctual, reliable, and professional.
- Maintain a supportive and respectful environment for students.
- Work collaboratively with the course instructor and other course assistants.
- Demonstrate initiative and take responsibility for completing assigned work accurately and on time.
Requirements
- Must have successfully completed CEE 2240 Engineering Surveying (or an equivalent transfer course) with a grade of B- or higher.
- Strong understanding of surveying principles, equipment use and care, and data collection and reporting techniques.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students and faculty in a supportive instructional role.
- Organized, punctual, reliable, and committed to helping students achieve their academic goals.
- Availability to meet the scheduling expectations associated with the position.
Position: On-Campus ACA Variable Position
Work Authorization: U.S. work authorization is required.
