Civil Engineering Intern
Elkhart County Highway’s civil engineering department is looking for interns for Summer 2027.
The interns will primarily work with our team of Civil Engineers and Engineering Technicians on traffic, transportation, and bridge projects in various stages of design and construction. The Highway Department’s engineers are often involved with projects from initial survey all the way through construction closeout.
The work performed by interns in this position will vary based on the department’s needs but often includes assisting engineers with the design and drafting of road, bridge, and drainage projects, as well as assisting in the field with the inspection of projects under construction. Interns in this position often have the opportunity to assist with preparing cost estimates, construction documents, and permit applications. When serving as construction inspectors, interns work with an engineer to monitor and observe construction projects to ensure project quality, as well as to help track the usage of materials and the project schedule. Duties for this position often include performing engineering studies on traffic issues and developing recommendations based on industry codes and standards.
As workloads allow, we try to rotate interns to work in different areas of our Engineering Department. It is unlikely that everyone will have the chance to get to do everything, but the Highway Department makes an effort to provide exposure to different types of work throughout the summer.
This position will require travel throughout Elkhart County. The Highway Department will provide a company-owned vehicle and fuel for all required travel during work hours.
The position will be based out of our office in Goshen, Indiana. Hours are typically 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Opportunities for overtime may be available depending on project needs.
