Graphic Arts Intern, School of Nursing

Job Description

The VCU School of Nursing (SON) Mobile Health and Wellness Program (MHWP) Prescription Produce Program (PPP), a Food Is Health Initiative program, is seeking a Graphic Arts Student Intern to support the design and production of a 12-month Healthy Eating Calendar and program information sheet.

The Graphic Arts Student Intern will be responsible for designing, typesetting, formatting, and preparing the calendar and information sheet for final production and distribution. The calendar will highlight the experiences of MHWP PPP participants and showcase program outcomes through engaging visual content.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop the layout, typography, and visual presentation of a 12-month Healthy Eating Calendar and program information sheet.
• Attend up to four (4) planned group meetings with MHWP PPP participants to photograph approximately six to eight participants for inclusion in the calendar. Meetings are expected to occur in person, likely on Tuesdays.
• Develop participant profiles featuring six to eight MHWP PPP participants and incorporate participant perspectives through direct quotes highlighting qualitative program outcomes.
• Creatively incorporate approximately 4–6 months of program infographics that communicate quantitative and qualitative program outcomes.
• Work with the scientific team to incorporate quantitative program data into the calendar and create simple, visually engaging representations of the data and program outcomes.
• Collaborate with program staff and participants to receive and incorporate constructive feedback on the calendar and information sheet designs.
• Prepare participant profiles and information sheet content in a format suitable for publication on the VCU School of Nursing website.
• Prepare the final calendar and information sheet for printing, including typesetting, layout, and binding/stapling as appropriate.
• Participate in up to four additional meetings with project collaborators and partners to discuss data presentation, design and layout, visual communication, and the project's sustainability plan.

Supervision will be provided by Kimberly Battle, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, Clinical Associate Professor at the VCU School of Nursing. The intern will have opportunities to connect regularly with their supervisor and other graphic design professionals through Food Is Health team meetings and one-on-one meetings.

The intern will also participate in goal-setting, mentorship, and additional learning activities designed to support their professional development and provide opportunities to expand their graphic design skills, collaborate with professionals, and gain experience working on a community-focused health initiative.

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled as a VCU student in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Communications, Marketing, or a related field. 
• Experience with graphic design, layout, typography, and visual communication through coursework, projects, or prior experience.
• Strong attention to detail, particularly with typography, formatting, and visual consistency.
• Ability to commit to approximately 4 hours per week for 14 weeks during the Fall 2026 semester.
• Ability to attend up to four in-person focus group meetings, likely on Tuesdays, to photograph participants and gather content for the calendar.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism when working with program participants and their information.

Hours and Compensation

This Graphic Arts Student Internship is budgeted at $20 per hour for 4 hours per week for 14 weeks during the Fall 2026 semester, for a total of 56 hours.

Upon completion of the internship, the intern will receive a $1,120 honorarium through Candex. Alternatively, payment may be provided in installments.

Position will remain open until filled, with a priority application date of August 26.
