The New York City Department of Correction is seeking dedicated and responsible individuals to serve as Correction Officers. Correction Officers play an important role in New York City's criminal justice system by maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly environment while supporting the care and custody of people in the Department's custody.

This is a challenging and rewarding public-service career that provides opportunities to develop leadership, communication, decision-making, conflict-resolution, and crisis-management skills.

 

  • Maintain safety, security, and order within NYC correctional facilities.
  • Supervise individuals in custody during meals, visits, recreation, programs, and other activities.
  • Conduct searches and inspections to identify and prevent the introduction of contraband.
  • Monitor assigned areas and identify conditions that may threaten safety or security.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports.
  • Communicate important information with fellow officers and other Department personnel.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, disturbances, and unusual incidents.
  • Enforce Department policies, procedures, and security protocols.
  • Count and verify individuals in custody and confirm identification.
  • Escort individuals within and outside correctional facilities, including transportation when required.
  • Observe individuals in custody and communicate concerns regarding potential medical or mental-health needs.
  • Safeguard Department property, equipment, and facilities.
  • Provide professional, respectful, and consistent supervision while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
