ABOUT KEY BISCAYNE COUNSELING

Key Biscayne Counseling is a small private mental health practice serving children, adolescents, and families in the Miami area. We are seeking a dependable and engaging graduate student to facilitate structured, non-clinical socio-emotional learning groups for children.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Children’s Socio-Emotional Group Facilitator will lead small, activity-based groups designed to help children strengthen emotional awareness, healthy expression, coping skills, communication, confidence, and positive peer interactions.

Groups will consist of approximately 6–8 children and will follow a structured curriculum developed in collaboration with a licensed mental health professional. Activities may include games, discussions, role-playing, creative projects, movement activities, and age-appropriate social-emotional exercises.

This is a non-clinical, psychoeducational position. The facilitator will not provide psychotherapy, conduct clinical assessments, diagnose mental health conditions, or independently deliver clinical services.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Facilitate structured, one-hour socio-emotional learning groups for children.

• Follow the established group curriculum, lesson plans, and activity guidelines.

• Prepare and organize group materials before each session.

• Lead engaging, age-appropriate activities related to emotional awareness, coping skills, communication, confidence, problem-solving, and peer relationships.

• Create a welcoming, inclusive, and emotionally safe group environment.

• Encourage participation while respecting each child’s comfort level and individual needs.

• Establish and maintain clear, developmentally appropriate group expectations and behavioral boundaries.

• Support children during transitions, group activities, and minor peer conflicts.

• Monitor group dynamics and communicate relevant observations or concerns to the supervising licensed mental health professional.

• Maintain accurate attendance records and complete brief session documentation when required.

• Communicate professionally and appropriately with parents or caregivers regarding basic group logistics.

• Maintain confidentiality and follow all practice policies related to privacy, safety, professional conduct, and mandated reporting.

• Participate in orientation, training, planning meetings, and periodic consultations with the program director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

• Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, School Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or another closely related field.

• Previous experience working with children in a school, camp, mentoring, tutoring, childcare, research, behavioral, recreational, or community-based setting.

• Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to confidently lead and engage a small group of children.

• Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

• Reliable, organized, punctual, and able to follow a structured curriculum.

• Comfortable responding calmly and appropriately to children’s emotions, behavioral challenges, and peer disagreements.

• Ability to work independently while following program guidelines and seeking consultation when needed.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALITIES

• Knowledge of child development and basic social-emotional learning principles.

• Experience facilitating children’s groups or leading structured activities.

• Familiarity with emotional-regulation strategies, coping skills, mindfulness activities, or positive behavior-support techniques.

• Warm, patient, energetic, and approachable interpersonal style.

• Creative and comfortable using games, role-playing, art, movement, and interactive activities.

• Culturally responsive and comfortable working with children and families from diverse backgrounds.

• Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus but are not required.

SCHEDULE AND LOCATION

• Part-time opportunity.

• Groups will be held in person in key Biscayne/Miami, Florida.

• Each group session will be approximately one hour. 

• Specific days, hours, start date, and compensation will be discussed during the interview process.

IMPORTANT POSITION BOUNDARIES

This is a non-clinical group-facilitation role. It does not involve providing psychotherapy, diagnosing or treating mental health conditions, creating clinical treatment plans, or independently managing clinical concerns. The selected facilitator must remain within the responsibilities and boundaries of the position and promptly consult the supervising licensed mental health professional when concerns arise.
