Undergraduate Director's Fellow (SJMC)

The UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) is hiring four Director's Fellows to join this Fall! The job application is live and due Friday, August 28th.

 

Position Title: Director’s Fellow

Unit/Department: School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC), College of Letters & Science

Location: Vilas Hall, UW–Madison

Position Type: Student Hourly

Pay: $16 hourly

 

Position Summary: The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) is seeking enthusiastic, engaged undergraduate students to serve as Director’s Fellows. Director’s Fellows act as official student ambassadors for the SJMC; guiding prospective families through facility tours and guiding incoming students on their applications and academics in SJMC. Additionally, Fellows have the opportunity to lead creative projects, depending on interest and time, which have previously included developing video tours for the SJMC website and designing custom event series

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Student Recruitment, Peer Mentoring, & Facility Tours

  • Meet with prospective students on their admissions applications
  • Attend student events as event support and answer questions as peer-to-peer advisors for prospective students
  • Conduct 45-to-60-minute tours for prospective students and families
  • Share firsthand insights on the SJMC curriculum, application requirements (e.g., JOURN 201), study abroad pathways, certificates, and student work like Curb Magazine. 

 

2. Special Projects & Creative Media

Assist with additional departmental outreach, community-building, and strategic communication initiatives and student engagement projects as assigned, dependent on student skills and interest. Each Director’s Fellow would produce an element of social media content for the SJMC per semester.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Enrolled upper-class undergraduate student currently declared in the SJMC (Reporting track, Strategic Communication track, or both).
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills with an ability to connect with prospective students and families.  
  • Thorough understanding of the SJMC student experience, application process, coursework, and major tracks.  
  • Reliable, organized, and capable of managing scheduling commitments independently.
  • Interest in peer mentoring

 

Preferred:

  • Experience in event coordination, planning, or promotional strategy.
  • Engagement with SJMC certificates (e.g., Sports Communication Certificate) or study abroad programs or scholarships
  • Experience in mentoring or counseling
  • Ability to create and edit video
