Greene County Mental Health Department Job Announcement:

PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER – STAFF ASSOCIATE (FULL-TIME)

SALARY RANGE: $117,735.80 - $127,491.00 ANNUALLY

This is a full-time, provisional appointment contingent upon Civil Service examination.

An employee in this class is responsible for providing psychiatric nurse practitioner services with advanced knowledge of psychopharmacology and prescriptive authority for psychotropic medications for clients of the Community Mental Health Agency. The Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry works in collaboration with a physician in accordance with written protocol, performing specialized duties in clinical settings or homes when indicated, performs mental health assessments, manages the care of patients within the field of psychiatric mental health, and provides health education to patients. The incumbent must possess the clinical skills to exercise independent judgment as a medical provider within the guidelines of agreements and protocols. The Nurse Practitioner assesses the physical and psychological status of clients by means of interview, health history, and physical examinations as relevant and diagnostic tests. Consistent with the medical protocol established by collaborating physician of record, the Nurse Practitioner evaluates test findings, make assessments and initiates appropriate treatment including prescription of medications and ordering of laboratory tests. Direct supervision is not a responsibility of this position, though the incumbent will participate in the supervision of Clinic Nurses. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of nursing principles, methods, procedures, techniques, and their relation to the medical practices of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner; Thorough knowledge of both the psychological and medical aspects of mental illness and the appropriate use of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy; Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of preventive and mental health care inclusive of those skills required to develop and implement a plan of primary health care to meet patient needs; Thorough knowledge of normal and abnormal signs and symptoms relating to physical and emotional health; Ability to perform duties within the American Nursing Association code for Professional Nurses; Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, administer, and evaluate the effectiveness of program plans and provision of services related to mental health illness; Ability to recognize signs and symptoms associated with changes in the

physical and emotional health of clients and ability to respond appropriately; Ability to understand and carry out technical oral and written instructions; Ability to participate in the supervision of clinical nurses; Ability to explain or interpret instructions of technical and professional nature to clients and their families; Ability to organize and operate a program of orientation for which the Nurse Practitioner is qualified and in-service training of various nursing staff and/or other personnel; Tact and courtesy; Integrity; Good judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following:

1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s Degree, including one (1) year of clinical practicum or one (1) year of post-degree professional experience in mental health or psychiatric nursing in a position involving direct service to clients; AND
2. Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse by the New York State Department of Education; AND
3. Current United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration registration; AND
4. New York State certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the specialty area(s) related to the work performed; AND
5. Credentialed as a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
