Position: Communications Office Assistant
Job Description
The Communications Office Assistant provides essential administrative and front‑desk support to the UC Irvine School of Physical Sciences Dean’s office and Communications & External Relations Office, while assisting with basic communications tasks as assigned. This position is designed first and foremost to support daily office operations and ensure a welcoming, professional experience for visitors and callers.
With demonstrated reliability, attention to detail, and strong communication skills, the student worker may be given opportunities to take on more in‑depth communications projects over time, such as social media content development, website updates, or storytelling support.
The assistant reports directly to the Senior Science Writer in the School of Physical Sciences Dean’s Office. Work may also be assigned by other members of the Dean’s office administrative team.

When you join the Office of Communications & External Relations, you will be part of a collaborative, supportive team environment. This role is ideal for a student seeking dependable campus employment with the opportunity to gradually build experience in communications, marketing, or design based on performance and interest. A Federal Work‑Study award is required.
Approximate Hours Per week: 10 hours per week
Pay Rate: $16.90 per hour
Responsibilities
- Manage the front desk and provide a professional, welcoming experience for all visitors
- Answer and route calls to the school’s main business phone
- Monitor and manage the school’s general email account, routing messages appropriately
- Perform general administrative tasks, including filing, data entry, scheduling support, and document preparation
- Assist with office organization and special projects as needed
- Support daily operations of the Communications & External Relations Office
- Support general administrative operations of the School of Physical Sciences Dean’s office upon request
Note: Opportunities for more advanced communications work (e.g., content creation, social media, graphic design, or storytelling projects) may be offered based on demonstrated skills, initiative, and performance in core administrative duties.
