Farmers Market Manager

Location: Harlem (Upper Manhattan) and the Bronx, NY, on-site
Term: September to November 2026 (seasonal)
Hours: 25 hours per week
Pay: $18.00 per hour
Reports to: Executive Director
Application deadline: August 31, 2026

This position is grant-funded to support seasonal hiring.

Who We Are

Uptown & Boogie Healthy Project, Inc. (UBHP) promotes health equity by providing communities in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx access to nutritious food, wellness resources, and educational opportunities. We operate weekly farmers markets, a CSA, a farm stand, youth programming, and culinary education. Our programs empower individuals and families to lead healthier lives.

The Role

The Farmers Market Manager oversees the daily operations of both of our weekend farmers markets during the fall season. Uptown Good Food takes place in Harlem on Saturdays, and Bronx Park East is in the Bronx on Sundays. On market days, vendors, customers, and community partners will rely on you. You will manage vendors and stall assignments, run the market manager’s booth and its nutrition benefit programs, keep each site safe and clean, and represent the markets to the public.

This role also carries a real marketing component. You will take photos at the market, distribute flyers in the surrounding neighborhoods, and help us grow attendance week over week.

Schedule

This position is centered around weekends and totals 25 hours per week over three days. On Saturdays, you will run the Uptown Good Food Market in Harlem from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On Sundays, you will manage the Bronx Park East Market in the Bronx from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Each of these days is nine hours, including setup and teardown. Both weekend days are required, and this position cannot be shared or split. Thursdays are from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM and focus on vendor follow-up, supply pickup, flyer distribution, and market preparation.

In November, market hours shorten seasonally, and the weekday shift may adjust. Total weekly hours remain approximately 25 throughout the season.

What You’ll Do

Vendor and Market Operations

  • Enroll farmers and vendors in the market through seasonal vendor agreements or as daily vendors
  • Assign and place vendors in stalls, including day-of placement for daily vendors
  • Collect all stall fees owed and maintain accurate accounting of payments received
  • Arrive before vendors and remain on-site through the full market day
  • Set out market signs and parking signs
  • Ensure all market rules and all applicable state and city regulations are followed
  • Maintain the market grounds safely and cleanly, and ensure the site is clean after vendors leave
  • Maintain the database of vendors, contact information, and any licenses or permits required for the products they sell

Market Manager’s Booth and Nutrition Programs

  • Operate the market manager’s booth throughout market hours
  • Administer the SNAP/EBT program, Health Bucks, and the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), including accurate daily token and coupon reconciliation
  • Distribute nutrition education materials and seasonal recipes

Marketing and Community Engagement

  • Take photos and short videos at the market for use on social media, newsletters, and grant reporting
  • Distribute flyers and promotional materials in the surrounding neighborhoods to drive attendance
  • Greet customers, answer questions, and provide consistently strong customer service
  • Conduct periodic customer counts each market day to track market growth
  • Build relationships with neighbors, community organizations, and local partners

Communication and Reporting

  • Answer questions from vendors and customers and resolve disputes as they arise
  • Communicate market policies, activities, and schedule changes to vendors throughout the season
  • Bring vendor feedback and suggestions back to UBHP leadership
  • Submit accurate weekly market reports, including attendance, sales, and benefit redemption figures

Tools, Systems, and Reporting

Market management dashboard. UBHP uses a custom tablet-based dashboard to run its markets. On market day, you will use it to check in vendors, record stall fees and payments, log attendance and customer counts, and scan and record SNAP tokens, Health Bucks, and Kids Club and compost bucks. Accurate same-day entry is essential because the dashboard serves as the official record for our grant reporting. What you enter at the booth is what our funders see. Training is provided. You do not need prior experience with this system, but you should be comfortable learning a new app quickly.

Slack. Slack is our primary team communication tool. You will use it daily to coordinate with staff, flag issues in real time on market day, and share market photos. Responsiveness during market hours is expected.

NYC Health Department (DOHMH) reporting. Our markets take part in the NYC Health Department’s Health Bucks program. You will hand out Health Bucks coupons to eligible SNAP customers at the booth, keep an accurate daily count of what was distributed, and provide the figures for our monthly DOHMH report. If no Health Bucks were available in a given week, you must record this clearly instead of leaving the field blank. It is important to show the difference between “none distributed” and “not recorded” for our compliance.

Language access. Our markets serve multilingual communities. Spanish and Bengali are the most useful additional languages at our sites, and Haitian Creole is used across UBHP’s broader programming. Language skills are a strong plus, not a requirement.

Required

  • Strong customer service skills and a professional, friendly presence with vendors, customers, and community members
  • Comfortable taking photos at the market and distributing flyers in the community
  • Reliable and punctual, with the ability to open the market before vendors arrive
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly with cash handling and benefit token reconciliation
  • Good communication skills and the ability to resolve disputes calmly
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently on market day
  • Available for the full schedule listed above. Both Saturdays and Sundays are required, and this position cannot be shared or split.

Preferred

  • Prior experience with farmers' markets, retail, food service, or event operations
  • Familiarity with SNAP/EBT, Health Bucks, or FMNP
  • Comfort with tablet-based data entry, Slack, spreadsheets, and smartphone photography
  • Basic budgeting or financial recordkeeping knowledge
  • Spanish, Bengali, or Haitian Creole language skills
  • Connection to or knowledge of the Harlem and Bronx communities

Physical Requirements

This is an outdoor, physically active role. You should be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds (tables, tents, signage, market equipment), stand and walk for extended periods, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on experience running market operations from vendor management through financial reporting
  • Direct experience administering federal and city nutrition benefit programs
  • A working network among local farmers, food producers, and community organizations
  • Transferable skills in operations, marketing, dispute resolution, and community engagement
  • Potential for continued involvement with UBHP through future seasons, project work, or paid positions
