Position Overview
The Museum of Appalachia is seeking a motivated and creative fall intern to support our communications and public engagement efforts. This internship offers hands-on experience in social media management, website updates, and event coordination—perfect for students interested in marketing, digital media, public history, communications, or nonprofit work.
The intern will work collaboratively with Museum staff to help tell the story of Southern Appalachia, engage visitors, and support the Museum’s signature seasonal events.
Key Responsibilities
Social Media
- Assist in planning, creating, and scheduling content for platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
- Capture photos and video around the grounds to highlight daily life at the Museum, demonstrations, animals, exhibits, and special programs.
- Help monitor comments, messages, and community engagement.
- Track social media analytics and provide insights on growth and engagement.
Website Support
- Update website content as needed, including exhibit information, event listings, and program updates.
- Proofread and refresh pages to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
- Assist with uploading imagery, blog posts, and timely announcements.
- Assist with search engine optimization and best-practice updates.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Digital Media, History, Museum Studies, or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and basic content creation.
- Comfort working outdoors on Museum grounds as needed.
- Basic understanding of website content management systems. WordPress experience is a plus.
- Photography, videography, or graphic design skills are a plus but not required.
- Interest in Appalachian culture, history, or museum work is highly desirable.

Schedule and Compensation
- Flexible start and end dates based on the intern’s academic calendar and Museum needs.
- Hours will be scheduled based on the intern’s availability and Museum needs.
- Pay is $15 per hour.
- The internship may be eligible for academic credit depending on the institution.
