Academic Director

Supervises: Tutors and Substitute Tutors

Location: Work must be performed in or around Los Angeles, CA

Position Summary

The Academic Director leads the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of Southeast Community Foundation's tutoring programs. This role oversees academic programming across multiple partner schools, ensuring high-quality instruction, effective program operations, and compliance with organizational, district, and grant requirements.

Working closely with school administrators, district and community partners, and SCF leadership, the Academic Director manages staff, analyzes student performance data, develops training and instructional resources, and builds strong partnerships that support student success.

Position Scope

The Academic Director oversees multiple tutoring sites simultaneously, with each site staffed by approximately 3-6 employees during the academic year. The position requires regular travel to partner schools while tutoring is in session for program observation, instructional coaching, and relationship management, with remote work dedicated to planning, reporting, data analysis, and program development.

Essential Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Oversee the daily operation and quality of tutoring programs across multiple school sites.
  • Design, implement, and improve academic programming, including summer programs.
  • Establish program academic goals and monitor progress in collaboration with partner schools and SCF leadership.
  • Recommend instructional materials and educational resources.

Instructional Leadership & Staff Management

  • Assign tutors and site coordinators to sites in collaboration with the Academic Program Manager, using skills, availability and location to ensure quality matchings
  • Observe, coach, and support Tutors to ensure high-quality instruction.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, supervise, and evaluate program staff.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, and evaluate program staff.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and professional development.
  • Address personnel issues and foster a collaborative, student-centered team culture.
  • Continuous review of curriculum, assessments and instructional resources, improve and implement new resources as needed.

Data, Compliance, and Partnerships

  • Collect and analyze attendance, assessment, and student performance data.
  • Prepare reports for school partners, grant requirements, and organizational leadership in conjunction with the CAO.
  • Ensure compliance with district contracts, grant requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Serve as one of the primary liaisons with school administrators, district personnel, community partners, and families as appropriate.

Continuous Improvement

  • Develop new procedures, assessments, and training materials to strengthen program quality as needed
  • Identify opportunities to improve instructional practices and program effectiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field; or minimum 2 years experience managing educational programs and supervising instructional staff.
  • Experience using student data to drive program improvement.
  • Strong knowledge of K–12 curriculum, assessment, and intervention strategies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Zoom, Rippling, and educational platforms such as IXL and Reading A–Z.
  • TB clearance and successful background check required.
  • Preference for candidates with classroom teaching or tutoring experience or a demonstrated background in K–12 instruction.
  • Preference for bilingual candidates with professional proficiency in English and Spanish.
