MHI Compensation: This position is eligible for the MHI $1000 Scholarship. Students who receive an offer for this position will be required to enroll in the Mellon Humanities Internship course to receive the $1000 scholarship disbursement. As referenced in the Student Interest Form that you filled out to sign up for participation in MHI, this scholarship can impact, or be impacted by, other financial aid you receive. 

If an internship requires out of pocket costs, students may apply for reimbursement for expenses including background checks, qualifying travel, or equipment. All applications will be reviewed and processed for eligibility. Please contact your departments internship coordinator for more details.

The $1000 scholarship offered for this position is intended to provide financial assistance for the pursuit of your education; it is not compensation for the performance of any services and does not create an employment relationship between the you and the Site.

This position is an experiential learning opportunity and receipt of the scholarship is tied to an academic course (IDS 3947). If you do not complete your registration for the course in a timely manner, your internship offer may be withdrawn, and your department’s Internship Coordinator may notify the host organization that the position has reopened.

Job Description:

Project Overview
As a Marketing & Communications Intern, you’ll help share our mission, connect with local partners, and highlight the incredible people driving our community fundraising efforts. This hands-on role focuses on telling inspiring stories, creating engaging content, and supporting local event campaigns. Positions are available to work to promote one of two initiatives: 

  1. the Hall of Hearts Committee
  2. the Spread the Space Network Campaign.

Part1: Local Outreach & Community Vetting (50 Hours)

Focus: Groundwork, local connections, and storytelling prep.

Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Research and connect with local community leaders, small business sponsors, and local guest speakers who align with our grassroots mission.
  • Gather background details and draft introduction briefs for leadership review.
  • Research local social media trends and gather story ideas to showcase our cause.

Deliverable: Community partner overview and outreach plan.

Part 2: Storytelling, Content Creation & Sponsor Materials (50 Hours)

Focus: Local PR, creative content, and community updates.

Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Write engaging stories, local media releases, and newsletter highlights for community sponsors and volunteers.
  • Draft friendly pitch materials and informational packets for local businesses supporting our fundraising goals.
  • Collect photos, quotes, and updates to feature local volunteers on our website and social channels.

Deliverable: Portfolio of sponsor packets, volunteer spotlights, and local press releases.

Part 3: Fundraiser Promotion & Impact Stories (50 Hours)

Focus: Event promotion, community engagement, and wrap-up reporting.

Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Help build and run social media campaigns to promote upcoming local galas, charity drives, and celebration events.
  • Feature local honorees and supporters across our website and social platforms during event week.
  • Gather feedback and stories from event participants to show supporters the impact of their donations.

Deliverable: Complete event promotional toolkit, published social highlights, and a community impact recap.

Qualifications

  • Clear, warm, and engaging written communication skills.
  • Passion for community involvement and nonprofit fundraising.
  • Basic experience with social media, content creation, and local research.
