Engineer I – Department of Public Facilities

Location: Falconer, NY
Department: Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 Hours per Week

Position Overview

The Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Engineer I position located in Falconer, New York.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional with a degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Technology to gain hands-on experience working on public infrastructure projects throughout Chautauqua County.

The Engineer I performs entry-level professional engineering work involving the planning, design, construction, inspection, and evaluation of County infrastructure projects. Work is performed under the direction and review of higher-level engineers, with assignments completed independently using engineering principles and knowledge gained through education and training.

The position includes a combination of office and field work and may involve interaction with contractors, local governments, County departments, and members of the public.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan and design smaller engineering projects and assist with projects of moderate complexity throughout Chautauqua County.
  • Design road grades and alignments and determine appropriate sizes for drainage structures.
  • Prepare engineering plans, calculations, specifications, cost estimates, and bid documents.
  • Request, collect, analyze, and interpret survey data.
  • Plan and supervise survey activities.
  • Negotiate and secure Rights-of-Way and prepare legal descriptions for Rights-of-Way acquisition.
  • Perform material testing and make recommendations based on findings.
  • Supervise road condition surveys and assist in preparing preliminary road programs.
  • Conduct traffic studies and analyze related information.
  • Investigate accidents and assist the County with related legal proceedings.
  • Provide quality-control oversight for multiple concurrent construction projects.
  • Assist local governments with engineering-related needs.
  • Attend meetings and represent the division as assigned.
  • Provide occasional supervision to technicians, field staff, and contractors.
  • Perform survey work and calculations where use of the individual's surveyor's license is required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college with a Bachelor's degree in:

  • Civil Engineering; or
  • Civil Technology.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in civil engineering principles and an interest in applying those skills to real-world public infrastructure projects. Candidates should be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team and should possess strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.

This position is particularly well suited for a recent Civil Engineering or Civil Technology graduate looking to begin a professional engineering career and gain experience in roadway, drainage, surveying, construction, and municipal infrastructure projects.

Civil Service Information

This position will be filled on a provisional basis from approved applications received.

The individual appointed to this position will be required to take the applicable competitive Chautauqua County Civil Service examination when it is scheduled at a later date. Continued employment will be subject to Civil Service requirements and examination results.
