Local District Special Education Administrator

To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills to provide sound educational programs for LEA students who require special education services.

 

This person works up to 210 days a year.  Additional hours/days may be required.  Salary and benefits are negotiated with the TISD Board of Education.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Other duties may be assigned.

-           Develops budget recommendations, provides expenditure control for Special Education at LEAs.

-           Evaluates on an ongoing basis, the Special Ed. curriculum, procedures, and individual student/curriculum needs and achievements.

-           Coordinates special education classroom programs and itinerants

-           Responsible for compiling and maintaining all special education reports, records, etc., legally required and useful.

-           Interprets the objectives and programs of the Spec. Ed. services to the Board, staff and the public.

-           Implements procedures for referral evaluation, placement, assignment, and re-appraisal of students with regard to the Special Education services program.

-           Consults with parents of students enrolled in the program.

-           Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special education.

-           Assists in legal hearing activities at the ISD and the LEA level.

-           Assists with the in-service and training of teachers.

-           Assists in the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs.

-           Recommends schedules and staff assignments to LEA principals.

-           Supervises and coordinates home instruction for special students.

-           Supervises Residential and/or Early Childhood programs.

-           Chairs important IEPT meetings.

-           Attends quarterly LEA Coordinator Meetings.

-           Assures completion of all LEA monitoring activities.

-           Maintains thorough knowledge of Special Education IEP/Data System.

-           Encourages and assists LEAs with MTSS.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise a total of over 50 employees in the Special Education Department.  Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Also directly supervises non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
