Music Teacher

Expressive Path is a 75% mobile nonprofit organization based in Norristown, PA. We provide creative arts, music, and enrichment programming that empowers young people through artistic expression, personal growth, and community engagement.

We are currently seeking passionate, creative, and dependable Music Teachers to facilitate engaging music programming within schools and community settings throughout Norristown and the surrounding areas. Music Teachers will work directly with students in classroom and small-group settings, providing interactive music instruction that develops foundational musical skills, creativity, confidence, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

Instruction may include singing, rhythm activities, movement, music appreciation, music literacy, instrument exploration, music games, and creative expression. Teachers should be comfortable adapting lessons to meet the needs of students of varying ages and abilities.

Position Details

Compensation: Music Teachers may choose to serve as volunteers or receive a $30 stipend per class taught.

Schedule: Morning and afternoon classes during the regular school day, with occasional after-school, weekend, and summer opportunities available.

Location: Schools and community sites throughout Norristown and the surrounding region.

Status: Part-time/Contract Music Teacher or Volunteer Music Teacher.

Flexible opportunities are available based on program and school needs.

Music Teachers who choose to volunteer may be eligible to receive documentation of volunteer service hours, letters of recommendation, and professional development opportunities through Expressive Path.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement engaging, age-appropriate general music lessons aligned with program goals
  • Teach fundamental music concepts including rhythm, melody, tempo, dynamics, music notation, listening skills, and musical expression
  • Incorporate singing, movement, percussion instruments, games, and creative activities into instruction
  • Foster creativity, teamwork, confidence, and self-expression through music
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment
  • Adapt instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and grade levels
  • Track student attendance, participation, and progress
  • Complete required documentation and program reports following each class
  • Communicate professionally with school staff, students, families, and Expressive Path leadership
  • Represent Expressive Path professionally within schools and community settings

Required Qualifications

  • Strong musical background with knowledge of fundamental music concepts
  • Ability to teach beginning music skills to children and adolescents
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, coaching, or working with youth
  • Excellent communication and classroom management skills
  • Ability to develop engaging, interactive lesson plans
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel to assigned locations
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to complete documentation and reporting requirements in a timely manner
  • Experience teaching elementary or middle school general music preferred
  • Degree or coursework in Music Education, Music Performance, Music Therapy, or a related field preferred but not required

Clearance Requirements

All General Music Teachers must obtain and maintain the following Pennsylvania clearances prior to working with students:

  • Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check (Act 34)
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151)
  • FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114), if applicable
  • Pennsylvania Mandated Reporter Training Certificate
