Popwheels Fall Internship

Popwheels Fall 2026 Internship Program

Location: Brooklyn, NY Duration: September-December 2026

Popwheels is building North America's first urban battery network to improve urban mobility & sustainable modes of transit for New York City's residents — from our battery swap stations to the PopCart, our new solution for bringing clean, portable power to NYC street vendors. This fall, we're hiring interns across various functions. If you're a driven, entrepreneurial thinker who thrives in a fast-paced environment, we want to hear from you!

Hours - 

  • For current students: up to 18 hours/week
  • For recently graduated students (in last year): up to 40 hours/week
  • Rate: $20/hour

Internship Opportunities
Deployments Intern – Contribute to the building of new sites across NYC

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct Site Surveys: Visit potential locations across NYC to collect site data and ensure alignment with applicable codes.
  • Lead Design Submissions: Prepare and manage architectural drawings, presentations, site plans, permits and other materials for stakeholder review 
  • Oversee Electrical Site Assessments: Collaborate with licensed electricians to evaluate existing electrical infrastructure and determine upgrade needs.
  • Engage Local Stakeholders: Partner with community groups and property owners to support site integration and conduct outreach.
  • Support Rider Engagement: Build relationships with delivery workers to drive the new adoption of sites and host onboarding events

Mechanical Design Engineering Intern

Get hands-on experience with design for manufacturing, lithium ion battery fire control systems, and sheet metal design.

Responsibilities include:

  • CAD based structural design and analysis of sheet metal enclosures
  • Design and destructive testing of batteries and battery containment enclosures compatible with UL9540 and UL1487 using NFPA68 methodology
  • Hands on metal fabrication of prototypes
  • Mechatronics design and assembly

Electrical Engineering Intern 

Get hands-on experience with battery swap tech and e-bike systems.

  • Work directly with contract manufacturers in Shenzhen to develop and refine new battery and battery containment products
  • Supporting R&D efforts in accordance with UL9540a, UL50, UL1487 and other applicable standards.
  • Battery management system controls engineering using serial communications protocols (RS485)
  • Design and deployment of battery health monitoring instrumentation


 

Software Intern


 

Work on both the front and backend software that powers Popwheels on a daily basis. 


 

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting app and backend development
  • Assisting with UI/UX improvements and user feedback analysis
  • Testing and optimizing software integrations


 

What We're Looking For

In order to be considered for an application, interns must meet ONE of the below qualifications:

  • Enrolled in or completed an undergraduate or graduate degree program in New York State in the last 12 months
  • Reside in New York State, enrolled in or completed an undergraduate or graduate degree program in the last 12 months OR
  • Reside in New York State, member of Disadvantaged Community or Priority Population, as defined by NYSERDA
  • Passion for startups, sustainability, and urban mobility
  • Self-starters who can work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills
  • Experience or coursework relevant to the specific internship role
