School Guidance Counselor
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide guidance and academic counseling services to students in an individual and/or group setting based on academic or vocational needs, placement in educational programs, career options, and/or social or behavioral issues.
- Work with school administration to develop and maintain class schedules for all students to ensure compliance with IEP and graduation requirements.
- Participate in transition plan development that aligns with the student's Individual Education Plans.
- Work closely with teachers and administrators to determine the best educational programs and class placements for RSD students.
- Serve as RSD liaison to link students with outside agencies and coordinate vocational, educational, and transitional services.
- Schedule, administer, and monitor testing with appropriate accommodations for NYS assessments, Regents exams, as well as entrance to the workforce, colleges, or higher education.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in Deaf Education or in a subject area
- New York State certification in School Guidance Counseling or the ability to obtain the same
- New York State certification in Teacher of the Deaf
- Advanced Rating on the SLPI
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong background in dealing with Deaf students’ social, emotional, and academic development
- At least 5 years of successful teaching experience in a high school
- Experience working with families and the community
