Associate Industrial Software Engineer

Associate Industrial Software Engineer

Location: Livonia, MI | Full-Time | On-Site / Hybrid with Field Travel | Entry-Level (0–2 Years)

About Us

Manufacturing Automation Group (MAG) is an automation integration firm based in Metro Detroit. We engineer, deploy, and support turnkey autonomous mobile robot (AMR) systems, AGV fleets, and custom industrial automation solutions for demanding manufacturing and production environments.

Position Overview

We are looking for a motivated, proactive Associate Industrial Software Engineer to take ownership of our proprietary industrial operations and telemetry platform.

This is a hands-on role for a self-starter who wants to own a real-world software product right out of college. You won't just be fixing bugs; you will write code, deploy software to customer facilities, and proactively identify opportunities to improve the platform's performance, features, and user experience. You will bridge the gap between web software and plant-floor automation hardware, splitting time between software development and on-site field deployments.

Key Responsibilities

Product Development & Optimization

  • Maintain and build new features across the full application stack (frontend interfaces, backend APIs, and database structures)

Self-Directed Improvement

  • Independently identify code bottlenecks, UI/UX bugs, and system inefficiencies, proposing and implementing solutions proactively

On-Site Field Deployments

  • Travel to customer manufacturing facilities to install software on local servers, configure OT network connections, test PLC/fleet data pipelines, and support live GO-LIVE launches

Data Pipelines & Integration

  • Build and maintain WebSockets, REST APIs, and database architecture to handle real-time machine telemetry from mobile robots and industrial controllers

System Administration

  • Manage containerized environments (Docker), maintain Linux server setups, and troubleshoot live production issues

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent portfolio/internship experience)
  • Core proficiency in full-stack web development using modern languages and frameworks (e.g., Python, JavaScript/Node.js, React, Vue, SQL, or Go)
  • Solid understanding of Linux, Docker containerization, databases, REST APIs, and basic networking (subnets, IP setup, firewalls)
  • Strong self-starter attitude with the initiative to learn quickly, work independently, and solve problems without requiring step-by-step hand-holding
  • Comfortable going on-site to manufacturing floors, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and working alongside industrial controls teams

Preferred:

  • Personal projects, open-source contributions, or internship experience in software development
  • Familiarity with manufacturing, robotics, or industrial IoT protocols (OPC UA, MQTT)

What We Offer

  • Competitive entry-level salary
  • Comprehensive health insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Gas & travel expense reimbursement for field deployments
  • Total technical ownership of a commercial industrial platform
  • Accelerated career growth in a high-demand industry
