Black Girls Do STEM - Math and Science Tutor (Grades 6-12)

The Math & Science Tutor plays a critical role in supporting the academic success and confidence of girls participating in the Black Girls Do STEM program. This position is designed to provide individualized academic support across a range of math and science subjects—from middle school math through advanced coursework such as AP Calculus, as well as all core science disciplines. Tutors work directly with a small cohort of students each semester to reinforce content understanding, build problem-solving skills, and foster a positive, empowering learning environment that aligns with BGDSTEM’s mission to increase representation and achievement in STEM fields.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring sessions (1–2 hours per week per student) throughout the semester
  • Support students in math subjects ranging from middle school math through Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus 
  • Support students in science subjects including, but not limited to, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and other secondary science courses 
  • Assess student needs and tailor instructional approaches to meet individual learning styles and academic goals 
  • Reinforce classroom learning by assisting with homework, test preparation, and concept mastery
  • Track student progress and communicate updates or concerns with program staff as needed 
  • Build positive, encouraging relationships with students to promote confidence and persistence in STEM 
  • Maintain consistent scheduling and attendance for all tutoring sessions 
  • Conduct sessions virtually (via Google Meet), at the BGDSTEM office, or at a mutually agreed-upon location
  • Adhere to all BGDSTEM policies, including safety, communication, and student engagement expectations

 

Required Qualifications/Skills: 

  • Must have accepted a Federal Work-Study award for the current academic year.
  • Strong content knowledge in mathematics (through at least Pre-Calculus/Calculus) and/or secondary science subjects
  • Ability to clearly explain complex concepts in an accessible and engaging way 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to build rapport and create a supportive learning environment 
  • Reliable, organized, and able to manage time effectively 
  • Access to reliable internet and technology for virtual tutoring sessions 
  • Commitment to educational equity and supporting girls in STEM

 

Preferred Qualifications/Skills: 

  • Majoring in a STEM-related field 
  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience in math and/or science 
  • Experience working with middle and/or high school youth 
  • Experience working with diverse youth populations, particularly girls of color
  • Experience supporting advanced coursework (e.g., AP Calculus, AP Science courses) 
  • Flexibility in scheduling and availability to support multiple students (up to 5 per semester) 
  • Passion for mentoring and inspiring the next generation of women in STEM
