Youth Engagement Service Member (Part-Time)

Position Summary: The Youth Engagement Service Member plays a pivotal role in bridging the DC community with our mentoring and enrichment programs serving middle and high school youth. The primary focus of this role is recruiting, enrolling, and supporting youth and families in accessing Kid Power's mentoring and enrichment programs. Key responsibilities include representing Kid Power during recruitment at DC middle and high schools, fostering strong connections and partnerships within those, and supporting in-school youth workshops.

Who is the ideal candidate? 

Our ideal candidate is someone who loves face-to-face interactions with youth, can engage with youth to convince them to join a program, and has a genuine passion for mentoring/education. This is a 20 hour/week in-person position. Members must be available for service Tuesdays and Wednesdays between the hours of 11am and 4pm. Remaining hours are flexible to accommodate your schedule and allow for a variety of recruitment activities within school hours.

Founded in 2002, Kid Power is a community-rooted nonprofit that empowers over 1,000 youth annually across Washington, DC, and Montgomery County. With an annual budget of $2.2 million, our evidence-based programs focus on academic confidence, social-emotional wellness, and civic leadership. All service hours, including phone outreach, email communication, planning, and service documentation, must be completed in person at Kid Power’s office or in the community where service occurs. 

This AmeriCorps service term runs from September 8, 2026 through August 31, 2027. Position availability and start date are contingent upon funding. 

Key Responsibilities

Youth Recruitment

• Attend lunch hours and other events at DC Public schools to recruit youth into the program.
• Maintain and develop existing relationships with school and community partners. 
• Complete phone, email, and internet outreach to youth and families to engage them in the intake process. 
• Represent Kid Power at community events. 
• Track outreach activities in organizational systems. 

Youth Intake

• Host information sessions and intake events for youth and families interested in the BEAM program.
• Support youth and families through the intake process through phone calls, email, and text communications.
• Maintain consistent communication with all youth applicants and families to ensure successful enrollment in BEAM programs.

Program Implementation:

• Lead or co-lead staff-approved group mentoring, youth-development, leadership, college and career readiness, and social-emotional learning activities.
• Document recruitment contacts, outreach activities, prospective youth follow-up, orientation and training participation, and member-led engagement activities using established Kid Power tools and protocols.
• Assist in planning and outreach for special events (match socials, trainings, enrichment events).
• Support the preparation of monthly emails to program participants to keep them informed and engaged.
• Collaborate with the team to showcase Mentoring & Enrichment programming on the web, including social media platforms.

Organizational Duties:

• Collaborate across departments to support positive youth outcomes.
• Attend special events (family engagement events, etc.) to support Kid Power's initiatives.
• Participate in AmeriCorps Days of Service 
• Participate in required supervision, BEAM planning meetings, AmeriCorps training, and meetings directly related to the member’s approved service activities. 

Skills and Qualifications

• Passionate about Youth Development
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work flexible hours (evening and occasional weekends)
• Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite
• Organized, self-motivated, outgoing, and solution-oriented
• Willingness to undergo required background clearances for working with youth
• Access to reliable transportation to attend regular community events

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working directly with youth and families
• Experience conducting outreach or recruitment
• Familiarity with the DC community
