Internship and Organization Description

Lawly is an early-stage startup building a marketplace that connects law school applicants with admissions consultants.

We are looking for a full-stack software engineering intern to work directly with our founding and engineering teams. You will contribute to real product features, participate in code review, test and debug your work, and gain firsthand experience building software at an early-stage startup.

This is not a traditional internship where your work will be isolated or heavily siloed. From the beginning, you will contribute meaningful code and gain visibility into the product and engineering decisions behind the work.

We use modern AI-assisted development tools extensively. Success in this role requires using these tools effectively while applying strong independent engineering judgment. You must be able to evaluate AI-generated code critically and ensure that it is correct, secure, efficient, maintainable, and consistent with the existing application.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain full-stack product features
  • Use modern AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, testing, and documentation
  • Thoroughly test and validate your work before opening a pull request
  • Confirm that new functionality works as intended and does not introduce regressions
  • Write clean, well-structured, maintainable, and production-ready code
  • Critically evaluate AI-generated code rather than accepting it at face value
  • Identify and address bugs, edge cases, security concerns, and performance issues
  • Respond to code-review feedback and improve implementations accordingly
  • Debug issues across the frontend, backend, database, and third-party integrations
  • Collaborate closely with the product and engineering teams
  • Take ownership of assigned features from initial development through testing and deployment
  • Clearly communicate progress, questions, blockers, and technical concerns

Required Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript
  • Strong experience with React and Next.js
  • Experience developing backend functionality with Node.js
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL and relational database concepts
  • Experience building modern full-stack web applications
  • Experience using Git, branches, pull requests, and collaborative software-development workflows
  • Experience using AI coding tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar platforms
  • Ability to independently review, test, and debug AI-generated code
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Strong professional written and verbal English communication skills
  • Reliable availability for approximately 20 hours of contribution per week

Technology Stack

Core Stack

  • Next.js 15 using the App Router
  • React 19
  • TypeScript
  • Fastify 5
  • Node.js
  • PostgreSQL hosted on Neon
  • Drizzle ORM
  • Tailwind CSS

Additional Services and Infrastructure

  • WorkOS authentication
  • Stripe Checkout and Stripe Connect
  • Supabase Broadcast Channels
  • AWS S3
  • Brevo
  • Twilio
  • Vercel

All application data is stored in PostgreSQL. Supabase is used only for real-time broadcast functionality.

Prior experience with the additional services and infrastructure listed above is helpful but not required. Candidates must be proficient in TypeScript, React/Next.js, Node.js, and PostgreSQL and must be comfortable learning unfamiliar tools and integrations.

What You Will Gain

  • Direct collaboration with an early-stage founding and engineering team
  • Ownership over meaningful product features
  • Experience contributing to a real, modern full-stack application
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted software-development workflows
  • Practical experience with code review, testing, debugging, and deployment
  • Exposure to marketplace architecture, authentication, payments, messaging, and third-party integrations
  • Experience taking features from initial requirements through production
  • The opportunity to have a measurable impact on a live product

Who Will Succeed in This Role

You may be a strong fit if you enjoy solving technical problems, take ownership of your work, and care about understanding why code works—not merely whether it appears to work.

We are looking for someone who can work independently after receiving context and guidance, while also recognizing when to ask questions, request feedback, or raise a potential risk.

To apply, please include your résumé and links to your GitHub profile, portfolio, or one or two projects that best demonstrate your full-stack development experience.
