China Technology Intelligence Research Intern (Mandarin Required)

China Technology Intelligence Research Internship (Mandarin Required)

About the Internship

China is producing an extraordinary volume of scientific research, patents, university innovation, and deep technology startups across fields such as artificial intelligence, advanced energy, robotics, materials science, semiconductors, quantum technologies, and other frontier industries.

Much of this research is publicly available, yet relatively little of it is systematically translated into commercially relevant intelligence for investors, companies, and strategic decision-makers.

The ESG Real Estate Laboratory (ESGreLab) is a think tank, building a long-term Technology Intelligence research program focused on understanding China's rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem.

ESGreLab works with investors, innovative companies, and strategic decision-makers seeking deeper insights into emerging technologies and long-term innovation trends. We are inviting a select group of students to join our China Technology Intelligence Research Team and become part of a research think tank dedicated to investigating breakthrough technologies, identifying early innovation signals, and developing a deeper understanding of one of the world's most dynamic technology ecosystems.

This is a research internship—not a consulting engagement. Our mission is to discover, analyse, and communicate the technologies, companies, and ideas that could shape industries over the next decade.

Research Focus

The China Technology Intelligence Research Team will investigate how emerging technologies move from academic research and early innovation into commercial applications.

Initial research areas may include:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Advanced Energy Technologies
  • Quantum Technologies
  • Robotics and Automation
  • Semiconductors
  • Advanced Materials
  • Battery Technologies
  • Climate Technologies
  • Smart Infrastructure
  • Future Mobility

Other emerging technologies shaping the future economy

The initial focus is China, one of the world's largest and fastest-moving technology ecosystems.

Your Role

As a member of the research team, you will contribute to ESGreLab's ongoing technology intelligence activities through:

  • Researching emerging technologies and scientific developments in China.
  • Reviewing Chinese-language academic papers, patents, research publications, and industry sources.
  • Identifying universities, laboratories, researchers, startups, and companies driving innovation.
  • Analysing the commercial potential of emerging technologies.
  • Mapping technology ecosystems and innovation clusters.
  • Preparing research summaries, analytical briefs, and internal intelligence materials.
  • Collaborating with international researchers across different disciplines.
  • Participating in research discussions and review sessions.

The goal is not simply to collect information. The goal is to identify meaningful technology signals and understand their potential impact on industries, investors, and companies.

Research Sources

All research will be based on publicly available information, including:

  • Chinese academic publications
  • Research papers
  • Patent databases
  • University laboratories and research institutes
  • Scientific conferences
  • Startup ecosystems
  • Industry publications
  • Public company information

Your ability to access and interpret Chinese-language sources will be a critical part of the research process.

Who Should Apply

We are looking for curious and analytical students who enjoy exploring complex topics and understanding how technology shapes industries.

This internship requires Mandarin language capability. Applicants should be comfortable researching Chinese-language sources and understanding developments within China's technology ecosystem.

Ideal candidates may come from backgrounds including:

  • Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Materials Science
  • Data Science
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Business

We are particularly interested in students who can combine:

  • Mandarin language expertise
  • Strong research ability
  • Analytical thinking
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies
  • Interest in investment, innovation, and global technology trends

Why Mandarin Matters

China has become one of the world's most important sources of technological innovation. Many important developments first appear through Chinese-language academic research, university announcements, government programs, local industry publications, and technology communities.

The ability to access, understand, and analyse these sources provides a valuable perspective for identifying emerging technologies before they become widely recognised internationally.

What You Will Gain

Through this internship, you will develop experience in:

  • Technology intelligence research
  • Emerging technology analysis
  • Investment-oriented research
  • Patent and academic research
  • Strategic thinking
  • Market intelligence
  • Executive-level research writing
  • International research collaboration

You will gain insight into how investors, companies, and decision-makers evaluate future technologies and identify opportunities before they become mainstream.

Why This Internship Is Different

Most internships focus on supporting existing business activities.

This internship focuses on discovery.

You will become part of an international research think tank exploring one of the world's most important innovation ecosystems. Your work will contribute to ESGreLab's broader mission of understanding the technologies, companies, and ideas that will shape the future.

For students interested in technology, investing, research, strategy, and innovation, this is an opportunity to develop expertise at the intersection of science, business, and global change.
