Walt's Waltz is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving mental health literacy, reducing stigma, and empowering individuals and communities through education, advocacy, creativity, and collaboration. Through educational programs, community partnerships, Stigma-Free Environments, and systems-level advocacy, we work to reduce suffering, encourage help-seeking, and create lasting change.

Working alongside schools, healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, businesses, municipalities, colleges and universities, and community coalitions, Walt's Waltz develops innovative programs that strengthen communities and expand access to practical mental health education. We also advocate for greater equity in mental health care and research, including support for innovative research and precision medicine that can improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Position Overview

This internship is designed for students interested in macro social work, nonprofit leadership, community development, advocacy, and systems change. Interns become valued members of the Walt's Waltz team and contribute to projects that strengthen organizations, expand community partnerships, improve access to mental health education, and advance initiatives that create healthier, more stigma-free communities.

This opportunity is available remotely, in a hybrid format, or in person at our Greenville, South Carolina office. Full-time and part-time opportunities are available for BSW and MSW field education, field placements, practicums, project-based learning, volunteer experience, and academic credit. Students seeking academic credit should consult their college or university regarding program requirements.

Interns are encouraged to share ideas, contribute to organizational planning, and participate in projects that have a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities are tailored to each student's educational goals, interests, and university requirements and may include:

• Participate in weekly supervision and team meetings.
• Collaborate with staff, interns, volunteers, and community partners.
• Assist in expanding Walt's Waltz Stigma-Free Environments.
• Support the development and implementation of mental health literacy initiatives.
• Conduct research on community needs, evidence-based practices, and emerging trends.
• Develop surveys and assist with program evaluation, data collection, and outcome measurement.
• Research grant opportunities and assist with proposal development.
• Support community outreach and partnership development.
• Assist with strategic planning and organizational development.
• Contribute to advocacy campaigns, educational resources, and public awareness initiatives.
• Assist with organizational capacity-building projects that strengthen the long-term sustainability of Walt's Waltz.
• Collaborate on projects related to nonprofit operations, communications, volunteer engagement, fundraising, and community partnerships.
• Complete additional projects that support the organization's mission.

Supervision

Interns receive regular supervision, mentoring, and constructive feedback throughout their placement. Weekly supervision meetings focus on professional development, project progress, ethical practice, and learning objectives. Interns also participate in regular team meetings that encourage collaboration, creativity, and shared problem-solving. Students maintain activity logs and receive evaluations in accordance with university requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Or a related field

Successful applicants will demonstrate:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent organizational, project management, and time-management skills.
• The ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Professionalism, empathy, and cultural humility.
• An interest in advocacy, nonprofit leadership, community engagement, and systems change.
• Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with grant writing, program evaluation, Canva, data analysis, or nonprofit work is helpful but not required.
