Job Description:

As a California Emergency Response Corps (CERC) member, you will gain hands-on experience supporting communities as they prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and climate-related challenges. CERC members work at the intersection of emergency preparedness, climate resilience, community engagement, and humanitarian response, helping connect communities with resources, information, and opportunities to build local resilience. 

Through this fellowship, CERC members have the opportunity to: 

Engage Communities & Build Local Partnerships 

Collaborate with community-based organizations, local leaders, and residents to better understand community needs and priorities. 

Support outreach and engagement efforts that strengthen trust, communication, and community-driven solutions. 

Help expand access to preparedness resources and services for communities across California. 

Strengthen Disaster Preparedness & Climate Resilience 

Support educational outreach and informational sessions that increase awareness of disaster risks and preparedness strategies. 

Share resources, including Disaster Ready Guides, to help individuals and communities take action before disasters occur. 

Approach emergency preparedness through an equity-centered, community-focused lens that prioritizes accessible information and local knowledge. 

Support Hands-On Community Resilience Projects 

Participate in projects that strengthen community resilience and environmental stewardship, including: 

Nature-based solutions 

Community gardening and neighborhood resilience initiatives 

Wildfire preparedness activities, including brush clearance and mitigation efforts 

Local service projects that support stronger, safer communities 

Build Skills & Explore Careers in Emergency Management and Humanitarian Response 

Develop experience in community engagement, disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and emergency management. 

Participate in trainings, networking opportunities, and professional development activities. 

Connect with partners and professionals working across emergency response, climate resilience, and humanitarian fields. 

Explore career pathways with a global humanitarian organization and within California’s growing climate resilience and disaster preparedness sectors. 

Make an Impact Where You Live 

CERC members are part of a statewide effort to strengthen community resilience through preparedness, education, partnership-building, and service. This fellowship provides the opportunity to contribute to meaningful local projects while building the skills, experience, and network needed to support communities before, during, and after disasters.
