RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Term of Employment: Up to 20 hours per week starting in December 2026 with the potential to continue until graduation based on performance. Note, the Director of Strategic Communications has ultimate discretion in determining the total length of the position based on performance, available workload, and other work-related factors.  

Description: Join the Communications Team at IT Solutions! We’re committed to effectively communicating with faculty, staff, and students about technology-related tools, services, support, initiatives, and updates across campus. We’re seeking a graduate assistant to support communications campaigns and help share key IT information and stories with the campus community. This role offers hands-on experience across a variety of communications and promotional projects, with opportunities to be creative, grow professionally, and apply classroom learning. The ideal candidate has a background in communications or information technology, strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills, a creative spark and passion for technology, and the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks on their own.

Primary Responsibilities: You will work closely with the Senior Technology Communications Manager and the Director of Strategic Communications at IT to enhance student and employee success and awareness of technology across campus.  

  • Assist in planning communications campaigns and timelines. 
  • Assist in coordinating and carrying out communications tactics and content as outlined in campaign plans. 
  • Write content for various audiences, including informational and technical writing, marketing copywriting, shortform content, interviews, storytelling, and more for publications such as internal websites, the IT knowledge base, news articles, mass emails, student channels, print materials, and more. 
  • Proofread and edit written content for errors and improvement. 
  • Create simple graphics or visuals to support communications. 
  • Develop technology training documentation, shortform videos, or other engaging content. 
  • Act as a technology ambassador for student and employee outreach, leading tabling efforts, appearing at events, and giving presentations about campus technology. 
  • Manage IT Solutions’ presence on the MavLife app, including creating and posting content for the student audience. 
  • May also include coordination and support of events, coordinating partnerships with other departments, or delivering promotional materials across campus and completing other errands as needed. 
  • Simple photography, videography, and graphic design (training provided, no prior experience necessary).  
  • All other duties as assigned.  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Graduate student studying communications, marketing, media, journalism, information technology, or related fields with career aspirations in related areas. 
  • Engaging and confident communicator with strong verbal and written English skills. Includes technical writing, creative writing, proofreading, copy editing, and public speaking. Have an understanding of the basic principles of communications and/or marketing. 
  • Have an acute attention to detail and well-developed organizational skills. 
  • Are a self-motivated leader with the ability to adapt quickly and manage projects and deadlines. 
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Admitted to a Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate program by start date. 
  • Enrolled in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester during assistantship, and in good academic standing. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Simple photography, videography, and graphic design (training provided, no prior experience necessary).  
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment. 

SALARY/STIPEND: Up to $10,000 plus tuition stipends, dependent upon availability of funds, period of appointment, and assignment. Appointments made after the tenth day of classes are not eligible for a tuition waiver. 

RELATED INFORMATION: 

Minnesota State System policy requires that graduate assistants must reside within the State of Minnesota for the duration of their appointment.
