UX UI Design Intern

UX/UI Design Engineer Intern Sponsor a Purpose / Sponsor a Pet | Remote | Part-Time Internship Schedule: Approximately 25-35 hours per week Compensation: College Credit | Strong performers considered for paid full-time role Start Date: Immediate

About Us

Sponsor a Purpose is a fundraising and donor management platform built to help nonprofits grow. Our sister platform, Sponsor a Pet, is dedicated to animal welfare organizations, helping rescues and shelters raise the resources they need to save lives.

The Role

We are looking for a UX/UI Design Engineer Intern who leads with AI and executes fast.

This is not a role for someone who opens Figma and starts from scratch every time. We want a designer who uses AI tools to accelerate ideation, generate UI options, pressure-test layouts, and ship client-ready designs faster than a traditional workflow allows.

You will work across multiple nonprofit client sites simultaneously, pulling from a shared library of sections, components, and layout patterns to build consistent, high-quality experiences at speed. Design standardization is core to how we operate. You will help maintain and evolve the system while adapting it to each client's brand and audience.

If you are excited about what AI makes possible in design right now and you want to work somewhere that actually pushes that forward, this is your role.

Responsibilities

AI-Accelerated Design

  • Use AI tools including Claude, and others to accelerate every stage of the design process from ideation through delivery
  • Generate UI concepts, layout options, and copy directions using AI before refining in Figma
  • Use AI to translate designs into code-ready outputs and speed up dev handoff
  • Stay current on AI design tools and bring new capabilities to the team proactively
  • Help establish AI-assisted workflows that the broader team can adopt

Client Site Design

  • Design and prototype nonprofit client websites by assembling and adapting modular sections, features, and layout patterns from our shared library
  • Work across multiple client projects simultaneously with varying branding, audiences, and goals
  • Collaborate directly with clients to understand their mission, visual identity, and content needs
  • Maintain each client's individual brand voice while working within standardized component patterns
  • Deliver clean, handoff-ready Figma files with organized layers, components, and annotations

Design System and Standardization

  • Maintain and expand our shared design system including components, spacing, typography, color tokens, and layout patterns
  • Build reusable sections and templates that can be deployed across client projects
  • Ensure component parity and visual consistency across a high-volume, fast-moving portfolio
  • Document design decisions so the system stays usable as it grows
  • Work closely with engineering to ensure components translate cleanly into code

UX and Product Design

  • Contribute to wireframes, user flows, and prototypes for the Sponsor a Purpose and Sponsor a Pet platforms
  • Help solve complex UX challenges around data-rich interfaces and multi-step user journeys
  • Work with the CEO and Head of Engineering to ship product features that are both functional and visually sharp

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Figma including components, auto-layout, prototyping, variables, and dev handoff
  • Active and fluent use of AI tools in your design process, this is non-negotiable
  • Strong understanding of design systems and the ability to work within and evolve one
  • Comfort working across multiple client brands without losing consistency or quality
  • Up to date on current UI trends, design patterns, and what is becoming possible with AI
  • Able to work independently and move fast in a remote environment

Helpful But Not Required

  • Experience with React, TypeScript, HTML, or CSS
  • Knowledge of Storybook or component documentation tools
  • Experience with Claude Code or AI-to-code workflows
  • Familiarity with Git or basic version control
  • Experience with Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Nonprofit or mission-driven design experience

What You Will Gain

  • A portfolio of live client sites across real nonprofit organizations
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining a production design system
  • Direct collaboration with a founder and head of engineering on real product decisions
  • Exposure to AI-forward design workflows that most designers are still years away from using professionally
  • Strong performers will be considered for a paid full-time role. Our current Head of Engineering started as an intern.

What Success Looks Like

A successful intern will:

  • Ship client-ready designs fast by leveraging AI and modular components effectively
  • Keep the design system clean, organized, and growing
  • Adapt quickly across different client brands without sacrificing quality
  • Bring new AI tools and techniques to the team without being asked
  • Communicate proactively and hit deadlines in a fast-moving remote environment

How to Apply

Please submit your resume and a brief response to the following questions:

  1. Walk us through how you currently use AI in your design process. Be specific about which tools and how they fit into your workflow.
  2. How do you approach designing for multiple clients with different brands while working from a shared component library?
  3. Share your Figma portfolio or examples of recent design work. What are you most proud of and why?
  4. How comfortable are you with HTML, CSS, or front-end frameworks? Give us an honest read on where you are.
  5. How many hours per week are you available and when can you start?
  6. This is an unpaid internship with a real path to a paid full-time role based on performance. Are you comfortable with that?

Sponsor a Purpose is an equal opportunity organization. We evaluate applicants based on their skills, potential, judgment, work ethic, and ability to contribute.

The biggest shift from the original is leading with AI fluency as the primary filter, not a bonus. That framing will self-select for the progressive designers you actually want and push away candidates who treat AI as an afterthought.
