About the Role
As a Technical Consultant – R&D Services, you'll play a key role in helping U.S. clients identify and qualify their innovation activities for R&D tax incentives. Working closely with client engineering, science, and development teams — as well as Leyton's internal financial consultants — you'll translate technical projects into eligible, well-documented claims.
This role is ideal for someone with a technical background (engineering, science, computer science, or a related field) who's curious about how innovation funding works and wants to apply their technical expertise in a client-facing consulting career, rather than a traditional engineering track.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Assessments & Eligibility Analysis
- Evaluate client projects to determine eligibility for R&D tax incentives, focusing on technical innovation, experimentation, and qualifying activities
Client Engagement & Interviews
- Work directly with client technical teams (engineers, developers, scientists) to gather project details and document qualifying R&D activities
Technical Documentation
- Prepare clear, compliant technical reports that support R&D claims and align with IRS and state-level requirements
Collaboration with Financial Teams
- Partner with financial consultants to translate technical findings into quantifiable claims and ensure accurate submission
Audit Support & Defense
- Assist in responding to technical queries from tax authorities and support claim defense when required
Regulatory Awareness
- Stay current on U.S. R&D tax credit guidelines, IRS standards, and relevant legislation affecting eligibility
Client Advisory
- Advise clients on how to structure and document their R&D activities to maximize future claims
Knowledge Sharing & Best Practices
- Collaborate internally to enhance methodologies, share technical expertise, and improve service delivery
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (required)
- Advanced degrees or certifications are a plus but not mandatory
Required Experience
- 1–2 years of experience in R&D consulting, engineering, or a technical role (R&D tax experience is a plus, not required)
