Seeking Data Collectors/Classroom observers:

The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) at Rutgers University is seeking Bilingual English/Spanish Data Collectors/Classroom Observers who are fluent in both languages. These individuals will conduct classroom observations in preschool-aged classrooms ages 3-5 years old across New Jersey including both North and South Jersey. Responsibilities will include scheduling and visiting programs to observe classroom quality using the Classroom Assessment of Supports for Emergent Bilingual Acquisition (CASEBA). Data collectors will be trained and become reliable with the tool prior to conducting observations. 

Applicants preferred: graduate students, applicants with a BA/BS, or current upperclassman undergraduate students focusing on child development, early childhood, psychology, or a related field.

Additionally, knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate early childhood teaching practices is preferred (e.g., Teachers, Child Assessors, etc.). Experience in classroom settings and/or working with children aged 0-5 is highly preferred.

  • Applicants must be available to work a minimum of 3 mornings per week (Mon-Fri), must be present for breakfast (between 7:30 am and 8:30 am in most schools), must stay for a 3 1/2-hour observation, and be consistent throughout the data collection period. 
  • Data Collection period: Fall 2026 & Spring 2027
  • Target hiring areas: New Jersey (you may travel up to a 1.5-hour distance from home). Reimbursed
  • Schedules are flexible, though applicants must be available to attend intensive 2-day in-person training (paid) and reliability observations following the training.
  • Attendance to each training day, for its entirety, is necessary to be considered. Paid
  • $165 per observation completed plus mileage reimbursement at the federal rate.
  • All Data Collectors must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and will be required to follow all project protocols and regulations to be employed as a Rutgers University per diem employee.
