Position Summary:
The Engineering Intern will support the maintenance team in improving manufacturing processes, maintaining equipment efficiency, and ensuring product quality within an Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) production environment. This internship provides hands-on experience in industrial manufacturing, process optimization, inventory management, and safety practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in monitoring and optimizing EPS production processes, including pre-expansion, molding, and cutting operations
- Support troubleshooting and resolution of machinery and equipment issues to minimize production downtime
- Locate, review, and interpret equipment manuals, technical documentation, and schematics to support maintenance and operational efficiency
- Participate in process improvement initiatives, including lean manufacturing, waste reduction, and efficiency enhancements
- Collect, track, and analyze production data using internal systems to identify trends and recommend actionable improvements
- Assist in managing inventory of raw materials, spare parts, and maintenance supplies to ensure operational continuity
- Support administrative and system-related tasks, including data entry, work order tracking, and documentation within company software systems
- Assist in the development, scheduling, and documentation of preventive maintenance activities
- Collaborate with engineering and operations teams on process optimization and ongoing projects
- Help ensure compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards
- Prepare reports, technical documentation, and presentations to support operational and engineering activities
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering principles
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Ability to work in a team oriented, fast paced environment
- Effective communication and organizational skills
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing or Six Sigma concepts
- Experience with data analysis tools or software
- Interest in plastics or materials manufacturing
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and work in a manufacturing plant environment
- May require lifting up to 25 lbs and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Duration & Compensation:
- Internship duration: Semester-based. Part-time hours a week. Monday through Friday.
- Compensation: $20 + an hour
