Part-Time Security Officer

TITLE                                   Security Officer

POSITION SUMMARY     Under the general direction of the Head of Security, the Security Officer is responsible for the safety and security of Hill-Stead’s buildings, grounds, collection objects, patrons, and visitors. Individuals work in uniform while maintaining a visual presence in and around the museum.

MAJOR DUTIES

Security

  • Serve as a cordial, helpful, highly professional security presence.
  • Enforce museum policies and procedures concerning fire, weather, emergencies, security, public safety, traffic, pedestrians, parking, tours, vandalism, and trespassing.
  • Open and close museum for business, deactivating alarms, unlocking doors, distributing portable radios, pulling shades.
  • Support the shop staff when managing visitors and enforcing museum policies and procedures.
  • Control traffic and parking. 
  • Patrol property on foot and in vehicle, observe and respond to anything out of the ordinary, take notes, keep logs, and file security incident reports. 
  • Escort individuals and tour groups into the collection area and monitor them during tours. May be required to question individuals and take action.
  • Responsible for administering basic first aid to individuals on the property, including CPR. Contact medical assistance for staff and visitors as necessary.
  • Respond to fire, security, and related alarms during the day, when on call, and otherwise.  Communicate with proper authorities as necessary including supervisor and on call officer.
  • Monitor and log sound readings during events and rentals with music to comply with town law.
  • Participate in fire, security, emergency evacuation, and object inventory drills.

General

  • Assist senior management in the routine maintenance of all fire and security related equipment including but not limited to alarm systems, portable radios, CCTV system, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers.
  • Maintain knowledgeable about Hill-Stead’s various activities, dimensions, events and programs.
  • In all duties, be responsible for cost efficient and effective operations.  
  • Clean bathrooms and take out garbage as needed. 
  • Support the Director of Public and Private Events in monitoring activities related to weddings and private events. 

REQUIRMENTS FOR POSITION

Education and Experience 

High school diploma required. Possess the physical stamina and manual dexterity to function as security officer of a 152-acre property with multiple buildings. Be able to lift 40 pounds, and pass a thorough security/background tests. Two years of experience providing security and safety service preferred. Obtain CPR and State of Connecticut Security Officer Certification within 3 months of employment and keep these current.
