Book Designer/Formatter

About Blue Byron Books

Blue Byron Books is the publishing house imprint of Ridea.

We're redefining American culture and ideas by amplifying innovative, bold, and imaginative voices.

We're a collective of writers, designers, editors, thinkers, and creatives working together to publish books that inspire curiosity, creativity, and meaningful conversation. We appreciate people who think independently, execute with excellence, and aren't afraid to build something outside conventional publishing.

Built by Gen Z and Millennial digital-natives, Blue Byron Books operates remotely through long-term creative partnerships, collaborative publishing, and revenue-sharing.

The Opportunity

We're expanding our design team and are looking for Book Designers to help shape the visual identity of Blue Byron Books.

Your primary responsibility will be formatting professional book interiors using Adobe InDesign for print publication. You'll work closely with authors and editors to transform manuscripts into beautiful, readable books that meet Amazon KDP and IngramSpark production standards.

We're especially seeking designers interested in:

  • Contemporary poetry collections
  • Rich Edition Classics—our premium editions of timeless literary and philosophical works

An interest in literature, philosophy, or intellectually curious books is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Format book interiors using Adobe InDesign
  • Prepare print-ready files for Amazon KDP and IngramSpark
  • Collaborate with editors and authors throughout production
  • Create elegant, readable typography and layouts
  • Maintain consistency across Blue Byron Books publications
  • Assist with cover design when applicable

Qualifications

We're looking for designers who have:

  • An eye for typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn
  • The ability to take projects from concept to completion
  • Initiative, accountability, and follow-through

Experience with Adobe InDesign is preferred, but not required. If you have a strong interest in design background, we're happy to teach our publishing workflow.

Experience creating clean, elegant, and visually compelling book covers is a bonus.

How We Work

  • We give green lights—not micromanagement.
  • We value initiative, creativity, and accountability.
  • We embrace experimentation while maintaining exceptional design standards.
  • We believe great books deserve beautiful design.

We care deeply about how ideas are presented—accessible, modern, and timeless.

Why Collaborate With Us?

  • Design books that will be published and sold worldwide.
  • Build a professional publishing portfolio.
  • Gain real-world experience inside an independent publishing house.
  • Collaborate with writers, editors, and creatives from across the country.
  • Participate in the Blue Byron Books Podcast to discuss your work and creative process
  • Help shape a growing publishing collective from the ground up.

Compensation

This is a royalty-based collaborator position.

Book Designers receive 5% of Blue Byron Books' royalties generated from the books they design, creating the opportunity to earn ongoing income from successful projects while helping build a lasting catalog. Along with two author copies upon publication.

Interested?

If this opportunity resonates with you, we'd love to hear from you.

Please apply with:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • Portfolio (professional, academic, or personal work)

You don't need decades of publishing experience.

We're looking for thoughtful designers with strong taste, a desire to learn, and the ambition to help build something meaningful.
